Specialist
Location: Peterborough, Ontario
The Communications and Marketing Specialist reports to the GreenUP Executive
Director.
Goal of the position: To actively coordinate and develop GreenUP’s
communications and marketing initiatives, with the goal of increasing the
organization’s visibility and community awareness of programs and services.
Responsibilities
The Communications and Marketing Specialist is responsible for all
communications, marketing and media relations activities of GreenUP. This
position is responsible for a variety of different roles including but not
limited to, maintaining close relationships with local media and acting as
organization spokesperson, undertaking advertising buys, writing and editing
tasks, producing a weekly news column, and working closely with the Coordinator
of Community Engagement and Development to assist with any fundraising related
tasks. .
Communications Responsibilities
• Work in conjunction with program managers and coordinators around marketing
and communications aspects of their individual programs, ensuring budgetary
requirements are followed
• Develop and implement an overall communications plan for GreenUP that is
produced in cooperation with program mangers and executive director
• Cultivate new and maintain existing relationships with local media
• Write, edit and distribute media releases, backgrounders and photos to the
media, following up as required
• Assist with planning of media events e.g. program launches and announcements
• Maintain an accurate media distribution list for local, regional and
provincial/national media
• Pitch story ideas to reporters and editors
• Write and submit weekly news column to the Peterborough Examiner and
KawarthaNOW.com
• Manage production of quarterly print newsletter and monthly e-newsletter
including gathering material and writing/editing content.
• Coordinate displays for special events such as trade shows, represent GreenUP
at tradeshows/community events as required.
• Make general presentations to community groups and stakeholders as necessary
• Edit documents for clarity, grammar and typographical errors
• Update website as requested by program managers or executive director
Marketing Responsibilities
• Research best investment of advertising dollars, work closely with media
sales representatives
• Write creative copy for print and broadcast advertising
• Prepare graphics and photographs for a variety of communications products
including print publications, social media, web, A/V presentations
• Act as social community manager for Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc
• Act as GreenUP Brand Officer, ensuring brand standards are followed as laid
out in brand style guide and policy
• Work closely with outside vendors for printing, web design, graphic design
and other projects as needed
Other Responsibilities
• Support annual year-end and spring fundraising campaigns
• Enter data into Sumac database, ensuring accuracy
• Run reports in Sumac database to extract key information on donors, customers
and others
• Support donor stewardship including answering questions and providing
information to donors
• Basic computer troubleshooting, setting up of email accounts and email auto
responders, and ensuring domain name registration and web hosting are in good
standing
• Participate in coordination fundraisers and events
• Other relevant duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications:
• Minimum 1 to 2 years experience in marketing/communications/journalism
or a related field
• Post-secondary degree and/or relevant experience in Communications, Marketing
or Journalism
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Strong writing, editing and grammar skills and sound knowledge of Canadian
Press style of writing
• Strong social community management skills and social tools like TweetDeck and
Edgar
• Experience with media relations and public relations
• Sound knowledge of MS Office applications
• Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
• Experience using WordPress
• Knowledge of Sumac non-profit software would be a definite asset
• Experience working with fundraising/development would be an asset
• General photography skills, including photo editing
• Commitment to being a part of a team as well as ability to work independently
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, demanding environment; ability
to learn quickly
• Access to a reliable vehicle is essential
• Flexibility in scheduling and availability as attendance at some weekend and
evening events will be required.
