Energy Communications Officer

Greenpeace Canada is an independently funded, nonprofit organization that works
to protect the environment. We challenge government and industry to halt
harmful practices by negotiating solutions, conducting scientific research,
introducing clean alternatives, carrying out peaceful acts of civil
disobedience and engaging the public. To maintain independence Greenpeace does
not accept donations from corporations or governments and is a non-profit
organization not a registered charity. Greenpeace relies on individual donors
and creative partnerships to fund our environmental campaigns.

Greenpeace Canada (GPC) is seeking an Energy Communications Officer to support
the implementation of a mobilization project focused on community-owned solar
energy. This will include the production and deployment of online and offline supporter
engagement tools as well as recruiting and mobilizing support for Greenpeace’
renewable energy campaign in Alberta.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Identify key campaign communication opportunities for target audiences. Seek
to build linkages between digital and offline opportunities for action.
• Create and disseminate strategic communications materials as needed in
response to stories we break or in reaction to news broken by others including
drafting press releases and media stories.
• Work with the campaign teams to develop and implement recruitment and
engagement strategies that support campaign and organizational objectives.
• Work with the campaign teams to monitor and analyze online and offline
recruitment and engagement efforts, adapting tools and techniques as necessary
to meet campaign objectives.
• Promote Greenpeace communication and campaign objectives through storytelling
techniques and strategic framing.
• Assist in the organization of public events to promote and increase Solar 4
All campaign messages and profile.
• Liaise with and supporting allied organizations or Greenpeace local groups as
needed.
• Write and produce digital communication materials and graphics for
supporters, volunteers and online circulation.
• Respond to supporter inquiries about campaign issues.
• Contribute to the ongoing development of the Solar 4 All campaign as
required, reviewing progress and participating in brainstorms and planning
meetings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required skills and experience:
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written;
• Ability to make and maintain effective contacts and relationships with
individuals, networks of individuals and groups both online and offline;
• Experience developing communication materials that enable citizen action;
• Ability to research, fact find, and fact check;
• Understanding of local, regional and national print, radio, television and
internet media, including alternative media channels;
• Understanding of, and experience with public engagement communication tools;
• Experience editing images or preparing graphics for the web and email
communications is an asset;
• High degree of initiative and ability to work largely unsupervised as well as
in a team;
• A keen interest in, and understanding of sustainable energy initiatives and
the risks of climate change.

The ability to work weekends and evenings is sometimes required.
