Food
Secure Canada (FSC) is a pan-Canadian alliance of organizations and individuals
working together to advance food security and food sovereignty.  We are
committed to three interlocking goals: zero hunger; sustainable food systems;
and healthy and safe food for all.  Since 2011, Food Secure Canada has had
an New Farmers Initiative, an informal pan-Canadian network of Food Secure
Canada that inspires, equips and mobilizes stakeholders to reduce the barriers
new local ecological farmers face, such as access to land, capital and
training.
Food
Secure Canada’s New Farmer Initiative (NFI) is currently looking for a
candidate to work in close collaboration with the project’s co-chairs, as well
as in consultation with FSC’s Executive Director, to support the coordination,
logistics, fundraising, and policy aspects of the project and work to move new
ecological Farmer’s issues forward in Canada.
More
specifically,  the experienced part time candidate we are currently
looking for will:
  • Convene
    monthly meetings of the NFI with a diverse group of new farmers and
    agricultural stakeholders and document meetings and collective
    decision-making;
  • As
    part a broader communications platform (details TBD), establish a formal
    NFI listserve to engage new and existing members of the network;
  • Handle
    logistics and coordination of an in-person gathering for representatives
    of the NFI in Toronto on (during the FSC 2016 Assembly–Oct 13-16th). This
    session intends to be a capacity building session on policy for new
    farmers and will also present the opportunity to strategize on approaches
    for incorporating agriculture in a National Food Policy and in presenting
    unified recommendations for Growing Forward 3;
  • Pool
    existing resources/documents with recommendations on key new farmers
    issues;
  • Building
    on the existing and ongoing work, and ensuring input from a broad range of
    key stakeholders, help draft a policy brief on new ecological farmers;
  • Facilitate
    consultations on feedback from the Growing Forward 2 policy platform;
  • Coordinate
    meetings with MPs and MPPs on new farmers issues;
  • Help
    identify and document next steps for the NFI following the assembly;
  • Help
    look for funding for the position in the upcoming months;
  • Other
    relevant tasks, as needed.
*Please
note that we are open to this position being divided into two roles, so
dual-applications are welcome.
The
qualified candidate will be:
  • Experienced
    and knowledgeable about issues related to food security and food
    sovereignty, with specific focus, research and/or experience with issues
    affecting new farmers/farm succession
  • Good
    computer skills and experience with collaborative platforms (google suite,
    office, website writing, database)
  • Familiarity
    with agricultural leadership, key issues, politics, organizations
  • Experience
    in meeting facilitation and building consensus
  • A
    strong sense of organization and logistics and ability to manage several
    tasks autonomously
  • Excellent
    communications skills
  • Good
    team player and able to respond to advice from a diverse group
  • Strategically
    sharp and culturally sensitive.

Key
Dates and Timeline
The
selected candidate will work with FSC over the course of Late June 2016 (Timing
TBD) – October 2016 – with possibility of extension.

As soon as possible (most work between Late June and October). Please note that
the coordinator is expected to work 2-3 days a week.
Project completion: November 1, 2016
Conditions
of contract commensurate with experience for a total contract of $7800
inclusive.
