This is a more common tape worm of dogs and cats both foxes
jackals and other carnivorous animals are infected. It belongs to the order of cyclophyllidea.
Although a parasite of dogs and cats, over 100 human infections has been
recorded with children being the major culprits.

Morphology
D. caninum is a medium sized worm measuring about 50cm in length
with the segment slightly broader. It has a well developed rostellum having
retractile rostellar sac with 1 to 6 or 8 rows of rose thorn hooks.

Life cycle
The gravid segment with
numerous egg capsules are passed in faeces or through anus on own muscular
effort. When freshly passed they are often seen squirming actively in the
faeces. The segment later disintegrate to release single eggs which are ingested
by the larval stage of dogs and cat fleas of the tennocephalides and pulex
families (e.g C. cains C, felis or F. irratans) or the dog louse (Trichodectes
canis). In the body of the dog louse it develops into a mature cysticercoids
larva.

During the process of
metamorphosis of the flea or louse, there is no definite change for worm. But at
the pupal stage they become nested waiting to be ingested by the next host. The
infection of the final host is usually accidental, and this occurs when the
flea has been nipped. Human, beings especially children occur when dogs or cats
having an infested flea in its month licks their faces when fondling the dog or
cat. Once they are released from the insectan, tissue, they establish
themselves in the alimentary canal of the definitive host growing and maturing
into an adult tape worm.
