ABOUT THE PARTNER
VSO Rwanda is currently working in partnership with the Rwanda Ministry of Education, US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Education Development Center and other partners on a joint 5 year initiative to strengthen teaching and learning so that children in Rwanda leave elementary school with solid literacy/numeracy skills.
THE VOLUNTEER’S ROLE
The volunteer would work with colleagues at Rwanda Education Board (a National Level Government Body), international development partners, Education Development Center technical staff, publishing companies, authors and illustrators to support the development of supplementary reading materials, including storybooks, poems, read aloud stories and other didactic materials, to support early grade literacy development. A key element of the placement will be to organize writer’s workshops with teachers, ministry staff, young people and interested members of the community to produce engaging and age appropriate reading materials (in Kinyarwanda and English) for Rwandan primary schools.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential qualifications for this volunteer placement:
• Bachelor of Education or teaching qualification
• 2 years’ experience of developing recreational reading materials for schools, including readers and other didactic resources that support literacy development
• Specialization in early grade reading

• Editing experience
• Basic desktop publishing experience
• Experience of working with publishers
• Experience organizing Writer’s workshops
• Experience of working with authors and illustrators of children’s books

TRAINING AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Our training and support package covers the costs of being an overseas volunteer, allowing you to enjoy a modest but healthy lifestyle while you volunteer abroad. This includes:
