The Volunteer’s Role

The key objectives of this placement is to conduct a market assessment of the
fisheries markets in northern Cross River State and connected markets in
Calabar south Cross River State. To identify out-of-state export markets to
analyse demand, supply, operations’ legal frameworks and to develop a complete
understanding of the current market situation across the fisheries value chains
operated by YouLead beneficiaries and technical partners.

The specific objectives are related to planning and conducting a fisheries
market assessment:
• Map existing local markets and potential out-of-state fisheries markets
• Analyze current market trends in terms of demand and supply, price-scheduling
mechanisms, market determinant factors, supply chains and CRS government market
regulatory and control mechanisms
• Analyze potential risks beneficiaries may face and suggest possible
mitigation
• Research and design innovative and market accepted packing and packaging and
marketing models that producer organizations can adopt
• Explore (with YouLead Financial Component Manager) micro-finance institutions
and illustrate how the producer organizations can be linked to them

As a volunteer, you will:
• Review existing market assessments conducted by YouLead and other
organizations including price control policies, and other relevant documents
supplied by YouLead
• Develop key informants interview guides and focus group discussions
questions. Key informants list will be provided by YouLead stafff (e.g.
beneficiaries, TTPs, suppliers, etc.)
• Identify and map potential local markets in terms of type, size, volume,
products, supply chain, producers, suppliers, transport, market associations.
Ensure gender-responsiveness and environmental responsibility are cross-cutting
themes in this analysis

Essential Academic Qualifications:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or its /Equivalent in Business, Marketing,
Development studies or related field

Essential Professional Background:
• Evidence of researcher’s in-depth knowledge of market and value chain
processes – e.g., published studies, researches, etc.
• Demonstrated skills in research methodology in related areas – e.g.,
published studies, etc.
• Knowledge of value chain methodologies, agriculture commodities and special
commodities markets, connecting farmers, farmer groups with private sector as
demonstrated in work experience.
• Demonstrated experience of working in a multi-cultural and diverse
environment
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; strong team
member skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
