Canada-Africa Research Exchange Grants (CAREG) in Canada and Africa

International Development Research Center is
funding exchange grants to support research between Canadian and African
universities and research institutes that address IDRC research
themes. 10-11 grants will be awarded for approximately 20 months to carry
out research. Support through this program will be cost-shared on a 2:1
ratio by the program and the partner institutions, respectively. The maximum
value of each grant will be $40,000 Cdn. Application deadline is February
18, 2014.

Study Subject (s): Projects
funded by IDRC must address one or more of the Centre’s four broad program
areas: Agriculture and the Environment, Global Health Policy, Science and
Innovation, Social and Economic Policy.
Course Level: Grants are available for research program at Canadian and
African universities and research institutes.
Scholarship Provider: International Development Research Center
Scholarship can be taken at: Canada and Africa (African researchers are
expected to spend three to six consecutive months in Canada and Canadian
researchers are required to spend at least six weeks in Africa, while six
consecutive weeks is strongly preferred, two trips are permissible).
Eligibility:
-Applicants from Canada and the following African countries are eligible for
this research grants. The project must involve at least one lead
researcher from Africa and one from Canada.
In order to be eligible for a grant, the lead Canadian project researchers
must:
-be regular, full-time faculty members (occupying positions below the dean; emeritus
professors are not eligible) at an AUCC member university who are actively
engaged in the scientific or pedagogical life of their university OR be
regular, full-time researchers at an affiliated institution of an AUCC member
university such as a hospital or a research institute; and o have completed a
doctorate degree in their field of expertise at least five years prior to the
submission of the CAREG application. Note that only the lead Canadian project
researchers may travel as part of the CAREG grant.
In order to be eligible for a grant, the lead African project researchers must:
-be regular, full-time faculty members (occupying positions below the dean;
emeritus professors are not eligible) at a recognized and established
university in one of the eligible African countries OR regular, full-time
researchers at an affiliated institution of an African university such as a
hospital or a research institute; and o have completed a doctorate degree in
their field of expertise at least five years prior to the submission of the
CAREG application. Researchers who have already participated in a CAREG-funded
project are not eligible to receive another CAREG grant. However, researchers
wanting to follow-up with a larger project may consider applying directly to
IDRC for funding under other programs.
-Researchers who were unsuccessful in a previous CAREG competition may re-apply
to the program.  Researchers can only participate in one submission to the
2014 competition.
-There is no limit to the number of applications from any one university.
-The CAREG program is open to joint projects between researchers from Canada
and the African countries listed below. Note that CAREG will not approve
projects with partners in countries (or regions within countries) with travel
advisories from Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada recommending the
avoidance of all travel or non-essential travel. Awards may be withheld if a
travel advisory arises after concession of the grant and before travel.

Countries
: Applicants from Canada and the following African
countries: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape
Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho,
Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda,
Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia,
Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe are eligible for these exchange grants.
Scholarship Description: The Canada-Africa Research Exchange Grants program supports short-term
exchanges between Canadian and African universities and research institutes
that address IDRC research themes. As well as joint research activities, the
program also provides some support to activities aimed at improving student training
at the graduate level. The CAREG program will support short-term exchanges
between Canadian and African universities and research institutes that address
one or more of IDRC’s program areas.
Number of award(s): AUCC expects to award 10-11 exchange grants.
Duration of award(s): Grant recipients will have approximately 20 months to carry out their
research.
What does it cover? Support through this program will be cost-shared on a 2:1 ratio by the
program and the partner institutions, respectively. The maximum value of each
grant will be $40,000 Cdn. The IDRC funds will cover:
-International airfares (the most direct and economical routing).
-Local accommodation and per-diems for meals and incidental expenses (using
IDRC travel rates as a maximum and lower rates for travel of three months
or more).
-Other travel expenses including visas, medical insurance, immunization and
ground transportation.
-Personnel costs (a maximum of 25% of the IDRC grant) to cover the payment
of replacement salaries when the African and Canadian researchers are
abroad (i.e. to release CAREG researchers from teaching commitments) or
for the payment of core salaries of lead CAREG researchers, including
benefits. These costs must be justified in the context of capacity
building for research. Note that IDRC does not pay salary supplements
(i.e. honorariums for full-time employees in addition to their regular
salaries or higher salaries than the institution would normally pay).
-Equipment purchases (a maximum of 10% of the IDRC grant). Equipment purchased
by either the African or Canadian researcher must be left with the African
partner institution.
-Research expenses including remuneration for research assistants, resources
for the research (e.g. journals, data) as well as computer and laboratory
services.
-Expenses that may be covered by the Canadian and African partner institutions’
cash and in-kind contributions include: researchers’ salaries and/or research
assistants’ stipends, publication costs, communication costs, technical
costs, conference registration fees, costs for organizing an academic
event/conference and interpretation. The partner institutions may also
contribute toward airfares, ground transportation, per diems, etc.
Selection Criteria: The selection criteria are as follows:
A. Strengthening of international research partnerships and networks (10
points)
B. Relevance and innovativeness of proposed research/training (20 points)
C. Objectives, methodology and results (35 points)
D. Sustainability through institutional support (10 points)
E. Researchers’ qualifications (10 points).
F. Budget (15 points).
Notification: It is
anticipated that results will be announced in May 2014.
