Adoptafarm: Concept and How and Why it Works:
Concept
Adopt-a-Farm is bringing crowd-sourcing home to the start of it
all…the farm. Our goal is to take LOCAL FOOD to a whole new level…to
support farmers in even more dynamic ways. We are creating a system
where we move from not only encouraging people to buy local foods but
to invest in local farms. Buying local…great! Investing in local…even
greater longer-lasting impact…awesome!
Adopt-a-Farm invites people from all walks of life to reconnect to the
land, the farmers, and ultimately their food. We do this by offering a
variety of farm projects for community-members to ‘adopt’.
We are a platform to bring both big and small farm projects to life.
We function much like Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com) or
Indiegogo (http://www.indiegogo.com) but operate specifically for
farms including urban farms. Any projects big or small you would like
community backing for, we would like to be your source.
How it Works
A person comes up with a project they would love to implement on their
farm. It could be anything from building a wildlife habitat, to
constructing a new barn, to putting up solar panels. They come up with
something that they would love to see happen on their farm (something
that they actually plan on doing and have time to do). They submit a
fun and interesting description of their project, tell adoptafarm the
amount of money they need to do it, and we post it on the site. They
help spread the word about the project to secure more backers (people
that buy-in to the project) to help them meet their fundraising goals.
This is not a loan but rather an investment people make to help them
get their project off the ground…to support them and help them to
implement their dream!
Why it Works
People choose to support projects through Adopt-A-Farm to help build a
cohesive dream toward a thriving agricultural future. It gives people
the opportunity to make an investment into a healthy future. It is a
commitment they are making to the kind of world they would like to
see. It is a vote with their money for the kind of farming and food
they would like to see in this world. And most importantly…it is
reconnecting our eaters to our farmers…placing us on the same team?
Together we are creating transparency in the food system …shedding
light onto the needs of farmers to create the kinds of food people
want to eat.
