ILO vs SIL: What Is the Difference?

Two NDIS home and living options are often mixed up: individualised living options (ILO) and supported independent living (SIL). Understanding the difference between ILO and SIL helps participants choose the right arrangement based on their living preferences, support needs and level of independence.

Supported independent living (SIL)

SIL pays for support workers in a home, often shared with other people. It is for people who need regular or high levels of help at home. It pays for support, not for rent.

Individualised living options (ILO)

ILO is a more flexible package. The person works with a provider to design how they live and who supports them, for example with a housemate or in their own home.

Where SDA fits in

Specialist disability accommodation (SDA) is a different thing. It pays for the building, for eligible participants. A person can have SDA with SIL or ILO support, or neither.

Choosing between them

Think about how much support you need, who you want to live with, and how much choice you want over daily life. Ask your support coordinator and provider to explain the options for you.

A simple example

Maria needs help most of the day and shares a home with two other people. Her support workers are paid through SIL. Sam wants to live with a friend in a rented unit and builds a flexible support package with a provider. That is ILO. Both could also live in SDA homes if they are eligible

What changed in 2026

The NDIS is updating some home and living rules. Check the NDIS website or ask your provider what the changes mean for your plan before you decide.

Key points

SIL pays for support workers in the home. ILO is a flexible way to design where you live. SDA pays for the building. They are three different things.

For a longer comparison, read ILO vs SIL and talk with a provider about which fits you.
