Turkish nationals kidnapped in Nigeria’s Kwara state regain their freedom

Four Turkish nationals were saved a week after being abducted by gunmen in Nigeria’s western Kwara state, police say.

Last week, the four, who are a construction firm staff, were kidnapped from a bar.

The abductors demanded a ransom of $1 m (£ 800,000), but the police say no money was paid and they have been released “unconditionally.”

Ransom abduction is prevalent in Nigeria, often targeted groups of person are foreigners and high-profile Nigerians.

Pirates assaulted a cargo ship off Nigeria’s coast two weeks earlier and abducted ten Turkish sailors. Their destiny is still unknown.

On Friday, Kayode Egbetokun, the police commissioner of Kwara sate, informed reporters that the Turkish nationals were found in a bush.

State police, local vigilantes and a team of officers sent from the capital, Abuja, carried out the rescue operation.

Mr Egbetoku said that the arrest of three other kidnappers had helped before the rescue operation.

“These arrests put pressure on the remaining gang members to release the Turkish hostages unconditionally,” he said, adding that police were looking for the rest of the gang.

After their release, the four Turkish nationals underwent medical examinations.

Melih Ulueren, Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, said he was pleased with the end of the ordeal and thanked those involved in the operation.
