Blood group system

Blood group system is a series of antigen exhibiting similar serological
and physiological characteristics and inherited according to a specific protein
(Schroeder and Jensen, 2006).

A total number of 32 human blood system are recognized by the
international society of blood transfusion (ISBT). A complete blood type could
describe a full set of 30 substances on the surface of the RBCs and an
individual’s blood group type is one of many possible combination of blood
group antigens. Across the 30 blood groups, over 600 different blood group
antigen have been found but many of these are very fare, some being found
mainly in certain ethnic groups (American Red Cross Blood Services, 2008).
Another common cause of blood type change is a bone marrow transplant.
Bone marrow transplants are performed by leukemias and lymphomes among other
diseases. If a person receives a bone marrow from someone who is a different
ABO type (e.g. type A patient receives a type A bone marrow) the patient’s
blood type will eventually convert to the donors type (Bayema, 2007).
