Compensation: $14.00/hr

Turtle Island (TIR) is dedicated to assisting our customers with tools and programs to divert as much material from the landfill as possible. We help with day-to-day material recycling management as well as large event recycling and waste material management.

We are currently seeking numerous outgoing, dynamic and environmentally-focused field representatives in the City of Toronto to assist direction of recycling and waste management for a one-week event.

Key responsibilities will include set up of event area, engaging and educating customers about the waste and recycling programs and events and providing excellent customer service .

Event Dates
7am – 12pm Thursday, September 29th
7am – 10pm Friday, September 30th to Saturday, October 1st
6am — 12pm Sunday, October 2nd to Saturday, October 8th

• Must be able to work a minimum of 4 shifts between September 29-October 8, 2011
• Must be able to attend training TBA- A 2 hour session during the week before the event

Job Purpose/Summary:
The responsibility of a dock monitor is to manage the recycling and waste flow at a large event and to maintain a record of the type and amount of recycling and waste material flows in and out of the facility before, during and after the event.

Reporting Relationships:
• Reports to TIR’s Account/Project Manager
• Communicate with all levels of customer, all levels of Turtle Island management and operation

Job Duties and responsibilities:
• Engage event and facility staff by providing information and direction about the recycling and waste streams
• Direct facility and event staff
• Manage the recycling and waste streams as they arrive on the facility dock to record type and amount, and then direct to location for disposal.
• Complete administration and reports as required

Job Specifications:

Knowledge/Background:
• Minimum 1 year completion of a degree or diploma in environmental science and/ or sustainability and/or human behavioral science is preferred
• Proven track record in project management, organization, leadership,
• A passion and proven commitment to an excellent customer service experience
• A belief, understanding and application of the principles and values of sustainability
• Familiarity with the evolving Zero Waste Standards, ISO 14001, Corporate Social Responsibility
• Experience in the Waste Management field an asset but not required

• Excellent organizational skills
• Excellent people and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and to apply effective leadership skills
• Good understanding and experience documenting and inputting data
• Creative problem solving
• Outgoing personality – must be comfortable directing event and facility staff in terms of the recycling and waste streams
• Positive attitude – must leave the facility with a clear directive on where recycling and waste material goes
• Be interested in, and genuinely concerned about sustainability in terms of waste and recycling
• Detail-oriented when completing program administration and data collection forms
• Punctual, conscientious and able to multi-task
• Have a friendly and professional manner and appearance
• Committed to providing exceptional customer service
• Able to recognize significant or sensitive issues and know when to escalate them to the Account/Project Manager
• Able to complete training and committed to the complete shift on event dates
