e that brings better information about
where food has come from to shoppers. Localize operates in nearly 300 grocery
stores across Canada and works with over 800 food producers. Localize won the
Fast Growth Grand Prize in 2014 at the Venture Prize awards in Alberta, and
Good Deals Canada in 2013 as the best social business case.
We’re looking for a Producer Relations Manager.
Do you want to work with an innovative and exciting team? Do you love to talk
to food producers, learn about their stories and products? Are you interested
in learning more about the complex world of food and adding to our pool of
creative people who are constantly coming up with new ideas? If so, you might
be the perfect fit to help us translate the fascinating stories behind our food
into digital content that can influence shoppers’ purchasing decisions and what
grocery stores offer on their shelves! Someone to help us work with food
producers (a.k.a. vendors) to translate their stories and data into digital
content for grocers and consumers. It’s a big position with lots of
opportunities.
Specs about this job:
• The job will start March 28th and will be based out of the Centre for Social
Innovation-Regent Park in Toronto, Ontario.
• This job is partially supported through a 12-month Career Focus Program grant
from Agri-Food Canada. This is a position with a strong potential to roll into
a permanent position with Localize. Many of the interns we’ve hired have
impressed us so much we’ve kept them on permanently!
• Your workweek will comprise of 37.5 hours and your rate of pay will start at
$21/hour.

To qualify, you must be:
• between the ages of 15 and 30;
• unemployed or under-employed;
• have graduated in the last three calendar years from:
• an agriculture-related program in a university, college or CEGEP; or
• a provincial program focusing on biological, agricultural and veterinary
science or applied technology; and
• Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
Here’s what we’re looking for:
• Communication skills – experience in other communication roles (e.g. customer
service)
• Time Management skills – the ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks
in an efficient way
• Sales experience – confidence when talking to some big players in the food
sector, the ability to deal with rejection easily, manage numerous
relationships, build rapport, communicate a specific idea that motivates
someone to action and think on your feet
• A related passion – a passion about something that drives you to want to work
with Localize and make positive change (e.g. environment, animal welfare, local
economy, the strength of the agriculture industry, food integrity, etc.)
• Results oriented – someone who is motivated by completing small or large
tasks
• An opportunistic outlook – the drive to constantly look for how to do things
more effectively, and the willingness to test out those ideas, learning and
improving as you go
• Internal leadership – the willingness and desire to step up when there’s
something to be done and take it on, even when it feels outside of your comfort
zone
• Attention to detail – hopefully this one is self-explanatory
You are a people person, are not afraid of giving an elevator pitch, and
demonstrate strong verbal, written, and communication skills. You’ll be on the
phone frequently, both to recruit and to engage food businesses into our free
program. You must not only be comfortable picking up the phone and talking to
strangers, you should love it. Previous experience in sales, retail, customer
service, is an asset.
You are excellent at planning, prioritizing and helping others (and yourself)
stay organized and keep things moving. You are comfortable managing 50 – 70
relationships at a time (through CRM software). You can also self-motivate and
work well when you have your own chunk of work for which you are responsible.
You aren’t afraid to ask questions.
A love for food, food producers, farmers, and the food system, in general, is a
huge asset to this work. You can see the big picture of what Localize is doing
and what we’re about and can easily translate this into day-to-day judgement
around what details are collected from food producers and how. In short, you
can see both the forest and the trees.
You’ll work with our dynamic data team of people who are passionate about food
systems to come up with new ideas that you would then test and improve upon.
You’ll gain significant experience in translating consumer values and grocery
trends into new digital products for Localize and in translating food stories
and data into enhancements for our digital platform.
