Have you been assigned the task of Maid of Honor? Perhaps your best friend or sister is getting married, and they want you to help with the process. As the name suggests, it is the highest honor of any guest, which means you need to take the role seriously.
So, what exactly does it involve? While every couple (and their wedding) is different, here is traditionally what is expected of the maid of honor.
Being an Understanding Listener
The first and arguably most important task of any maid of honor is being an understanding listener. Most of the time, it will mean providing an ear to the bride-to-be. Wedding planning can be stressful, after all, so having you there to listen without judgment will be necessary from time to time!
Helping with the Wedding Planning Process
Whether the bride has a clear vision of their wedding or has no idea where to begin, the maid of honor usually helps with the planning process. It’s a hard job, after all. As the maid of honor, you may need to conduct some research into wedding catering, for example. The bride may give you a list of what she wants from the catering, such as no seafood or all vegetarian, and then let you pick a shortlist of wedding caterers. It will help alleviate some of the wedding planning stress for the bride and groom.
Coordinating the Bridesmaids
There is the maid of honor, and then there are the bridesmaids. The bridesmaids will be coordinated by the maid of honor. So, if you have that job, you’ll need to make sure they are all well prepared for the big day, whether that means ensuring their dresses fit well or that they know where to stand and in what order.
Planning Pre-Wedding Events
There are several pre-wedding events that the maid of honor will typically be in charge of, including the bridal shower. As the maid of honor, you will be the one planning the entertainment for the bridal shower, such as the venue and food. It’s not as big a planning process as the wedding, as it will be a smaller, more intimate gathering of the bride’s friends and family.
Answering Questions from Guests
The last thing the bride needs on the run-up to her wedding is to be inundated with questions from a variety of guests. That’s why the maid of honor will typically take charge of answering guest questions. Whether someone needs to know the start time of the wedding or whether their gift is appropriate, they can ask the maid of honor rather than the bride or groom.
Getting the Bride Ready
Getting ready on the big day is like an event in itself! The maid of honor has the task of helping the bride get ready on the big day. That might involve helping her into the dress, checking her hair, or holding up a mirror to show the bride the back of her hairstyle!
