Job Title: Generator Electrician

ALL ORDINARILY RESIDENT (OR) APPLICANTS MUST HAVE THE REQUIRED WORK AND/OR

The US Embassy is seeking an individual for the position of Generator
Electrician in Facilities Maintenance Section.

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION

Maintaining power generation equipment and electrical power services to the
Mission Community.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

50%

This position is responsible for the installation, trouble shooting, servicing,
repair, and conducting of preventative maintenance programs on over 100
emergency generators and related electrical equipment. Also, responsible for
the emergency repair, inventory and ordering of generator sets, parts and the
installation of emergency generators. Also responsible for all related switch
gear, all related automatic transfer switch installation, repairs. Also
responsible for all related automatic voltage regulators, installation,
inspection and repairs. Performs normal preventive maintenance inspections and
duties while working alone or sometimes with an assigned helper. Performs Major
and Minor overhauls and rebuilds.

Monitors emergency generator operations, fuel consumption and fuel tank levels,
coolant levels, run hours, inspects all generators weekly and keeps assigned
feet in 100% operational running condition. Inspects Medium Voltage Switchgear
or related automatic voltage regulators, automatic transfer switches, and all
other power generation related equipment, directly or indirectly connected to
any of our generators. Reads and reports on LUKU units for electricity.
Prepares daily activity reports, weekly status reports, orders all required
spare parts and maintains accurate files for all assigned generators and
electrical equipment. Prepares daily work orders and replenishes shop stock
utilized for PM Related work performed. Keeps finitely accurate records of
materials requested, and materials utilized by each generator location.

Exercises essential day-to-day self discipline and advises maintenance
supervisor on matters involving generator condition, generator operation,
section level management issues or personnel actions. Keeps shop are clean and
all generator rooms clean.

Prepares daily, weekly and monthly reports and maintains files for all
installed enerators, power generation or power distribution equipment and
electrical transfer equipment. Identifies and orders required spare parts.
Maintains accurate equipment and associated spare parts logs and manuals. Makes
recommendations to supervisors on equipment replacement and modifications to
existing standard operating procedures.

Performs job activities and duties in a responsible manner to avoid the
creation of safety or health hazards; Confirms to established safety and health
policies and procedures; properly utilizes appropriate personal protective
equipment as required by job activity; informs supervisor of all accidents,
illnesses and injuries; promptly reports unsafe or hazardous conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with
specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.

Education: Completion of secondary school (Form VI) is required. Completion of
Vocational Training and apprenticeship (required).
Prior Work Experience: Five years experience in repairing and power generation
power plants and three or more years experience in the installation,
maintenance and repair of heavy industrialized electrical systems and operation
of utilities equipment. Must have substantial experience on over 50 generators
of various sizes and must have worked on with exceptional level experience on
power generation equipment larger than 1000 KW.
Language: Level III (good working knowledge) in English and Level IV (fluent) in
Kiswahili (speaking writing and reading) is required. Must be able to read and
interpret industrial drawings and complex manufacturers maintenance manuals in
English. All written communication is in English, must be able to completely
comprehend.
Knowledge: Must have a superior working knowledge of all sizes or water cooled
diesel powered generators, must know engine characteristics and completely
understand power generation, power utilities and operating procedures and
practices relating to water cooled diesel power generators and low voltage and
medium voltage electrical services.
Skills and Abilities: Must be able to readily interpret blue prints, electrical
drawings, manufacturer’s manuals, must be able to use all levels of voltage
testing equipment, must be a stand alone capable level technician. Must have
computer skills Must be able to plan 6 to 12 weeks in advance. Must have valid
driver’s license and the ability to safely and regularly drive a GOV Vehicle.

SELECTION PROCESS
