Treatment of urinary tract infections

Generally the commencement of treatment process
start after the diagnosis of the infection . Mild cases of UTIs may disappear
spontaneously without treatment. However because of the risk of the infection
spreading to kidneys (complicated UTI), treatment is usually recommended.

Antibiotics may be used to control the bacteria
infection. The drug of choice and length of treatment depends on the patients
history and urine test that identify the offending bacteria. Commonly used
antibiotics includes;
·
Nitrofurantoin
·
Sulfa
drugs (sulfonamides)
·
Amoxicillin
·
Cephalosporins
·
Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
·
Doxycycline
For infection involving the kidneys, stronger
antibiotics are given intravenously depending on the nature and gender of the
patient (Guinto, Guia, Festin, and Dowswell, 2010).
