Thyroid gland disease and its dietary management

Abstract
The thyroid gland is about 2-inches long and lies in front of the throat
below the prominence of the thyroid cartilage sometimes called the Adam’s
apple. The thyroid gland has two sides called lobes that lie on either sides of
the windpipe and it is usually connected by a strip of thyroid tissue known as
isthmus. The major disorders (problems) of the thyroid gland are
hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism which have been reported in over 110 countries
of the world with 1.6 billion people at risk and need some forms of iodine
supplements. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is diffused hyperplasia
of the thyroid associated with Graves diseases. Signs and symptoms of thyroid
gland disease include red palms of the hands, loose nails, muscular weakness,
etc. Dietary management of thyroid gland disease include choose low fatty foods
and avoiding high salt intake.
