The P.I.N.E. Project is hiring staff and volunteers for our Fall 2016-Spring
2017 programs.

Pay: $14-16/hour (depending on experience and qualifications) to start.

WHO WE ARE:

The Primitive Integrated Naturalist Education (P.I.N.E.) Project is a
registered charitable organization created to bring the wonders of the natural
world back to the urban jungle. P.I.N.E.’s mission is to inspire healthy,
lifelong connections between people and nature through outdoor-based learning
and play.

This fall P.I.N.E. will be offering after school programs, in school programs,
and programs for homeschooled children, as well as hosting a monthly tracking
club and various skills-based workshops for adults and families. There are
staff opportunities with all of our programs (described below).

PROGRAM STAFF OPPORTUNITIES:

The p.i.n.e. project is seeking part time staff (15 hours per week on average)
to work on Monday and Tuesdays, plus one weekend per month. These are with a
School program, and our Community Outdoor School day programming.

PROGRAM VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Volunteering with p.i.n.e. is a great way to gain skills and experience with
our specific style of programming and connecting people with nature.
Below is a list of programming that runs year round, during the week. Please
see our website for the specific program schedule and what programs run when
and where.

PINE Community Outdoor School – Oaks and Acorns (Parent and Child, ages 0-3)

Oaks and Acorns is designed to help parents create meaningful experiences in
nature for their children. Parents will develop their own mentoring and naturalist
skills, share celebrations of children’s growth, and join a community steeped
in nature connection. Oaks and Acorns is held 930am-1130am one morning per
week.

PINE Community Outdoor School – Coyote Pups (ages 4-7)

Each Coyote Pups program has one 3-hour session per week from October to June.
These programs are exploratory, curious, and adventuresome, and focuses on
building curiosity, basic skill sets in the outdoors, and setting the
foundations of a holistic, resilient, healthy childhood.

PINE Community Outdoor School – Fiery Foxes (ages 7-10)

Our urban Fiery Foxes is a 4-hour program each week in the city. Nature based
games, learning and exploration is a big part of each Fiery Foxes session,
along with skill building and crafting.

After School Program – Run Wild (ages 6-9, 10-13)

The after school program is held 4:15 – 6:15pm on weekdays. Monday has a co-ed
program and Tuesdays and Wednesdays Girls’ and boys’ programs are run as
independent programs, though often work together. Mondays and Tuesdays are
6-9yrs, Wednesdays are 10-13yrs programs.

Weekend Wanderers Program – (ages 4- 7, 7-10, 10-13)

One day per month our Weekend Wanderers get together from 10am to 4pm in Taylor
Creek Park throughout the year. This program runs from Oct to June, and focuses
on whatever amazing seasonal things are happening in the urban wilderness. From
Survival Skills to snow forts to wild plants to bird language and more!

Adventure Out Program – (Ages 7-10, 10-13)

The Adventure Out program is a full day wilderness program taking place just
outside Toronto each Thursday. Participants bus out to a partner location,
spending the day in the woods at our hand crafted program location.

QUALIFICATIONS

Below please find a list of qualifications, assets and recommended courses
valued in the P.I.N.E. hiring process. P.I.N.E. is committed to creating
resilient, diverse and vibrant communities. To this end we recognize that we
need people from diverse professional, cultural and educational backgrounds. As
such, applicants who do not have some aspects of the stated skill set, that
feel they would still make a positive contribution to the camp community are
encouraged to apply, and address these differences in the cover letter.

Volunteers:
• Up to date Police Vulnerable Sectors Check
• Organized, punctual, and dedicated
• A commitment to children and mentoring youth
• Experience working with children (in the outdoors) preferred

Staff:

Mandatory Qualifications:
• Up to date Police Vulnerable Sectors Check
• Current FA
• 3+ years experience working with various ages of children in a mentorship
role
• Outdoor Education, guiding, and/or adventure education experience
• G Class Drivers License
• High level of competence in the wilderness
• Organized, punctual, and dedicated
• A commitment to children and mentoring youth

Preferred Qualifications/experience:
• Up to date Wilderness First Aid certification- WFR/ WAFA
• Naturalist knowledge of local ecosystems
• Knowledge of wild edible and medicinal plants
• Participated in wilderness skills intensive program, or have equivalent
knowledge from time spent outdoors
• Have been educated in a naturalist based program: Formal education or
otherwise
• Background in theatre, music, dance or the creative arts
• Participated in/volunteered at traditional skills gatherings (i.e.
Headwaters)
• Experienced in wildlife tracking
• Graduate of the Ontario Art of Mentoring program
• Familiar with the Coyote’s Guide to Nature Connection or the 8 Shields
approach to Nature Connection

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Driving program vehicles to and from program locations
• Organize equipment and gear systems
• Maintain, clean, and repair equipment from time to time
• Assist in providing positive learning and recreational experiences for
children and youth ages 0-13 and their parents
• Assist in the supervision of educational and recreational activities
• Plan program set-up and delivery
• Be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Be available to participate in a mandatory staff training sessions each
season
• Participate in a seasonal celebration night towards the end of the programs
