Overview
The
Coordinator, Conservation Biology – Georgian Bay – Huronia (GBH) supports the
Program Director in conservation efforts in the GBH sub region. Georgian Bay –
Huronia encompasses a broad geographic area stretching from
Creemore/Collingwood across the Minesing Wetlands and Barrie, through the
Orillia and Couchiching regions, the Muskokas, and the eastern coast of
Georgian Bay and the North Channel. The objective of the program is the
delivery of NCC’s mission of protecting biological diversity through strategic,
science-based land conservation and stewardship. This position focuses
primarily on the Carden Alvar and Minesing Wetlands areas. The Coordinator,
Conservation Biology is responsible for planning and implementing stewardship
on NCC lands and associated Natural Areas and is directly engaged in community
outreach and partnerships in the subregion. This position contributes to
strategic conservation planning by working with staff and partners to identify
significant areas of biological diversity.

1.
Property Stewardship, Conservation Science & Planning
Property Stewardship, Conservation Science & Planning
- Manage
the field work and reporting required to develop and implement property
management plans for NCC owned properties; - Work
closely with local area partners to coordinate the delivery of stewardship
and outreach in priority natural areas; - Work
with local land stewards and contractors; - Monitor
and report on conservation easements, including managing ongoing landowner
relations; - Coordinate
the funding and implementation of priority research and management
activities; - Lead
the abatement of critical threats (e.g. control of invasive species; human
impact mitigation) and liability issues on NCC lands; - Assess
the biological and strategic values of lands under consideration for
securement; - Ensure
the short and long term maintenance and enhancement of conservation
targets on NCC-owned properties; - Coordinate
the monitoring and reporting on the status of conservation targets on NCC
transferred properties; - Coordinate
Conservation Volunteers events, in consultation with the Regional
Conservation Coordinator; - Assist
in the development of strategic landscape-scale plans to guide securement
and stewardship, and to measure conservation success. - Coordinate
the preparation of baseline inventories, property management plans,
baseline documentation reports; - Participate
in the development of Natural Area Conservation Plans.

- Ensure
that accurate and current baseline property information and records are
available to regional and national managers; - In
collaboration with regional accounting and other staff, administer the
payment of property taxes for NCC owned lands and help ensure lands are
enrolled in appropriate tax reduction programs; - Ensure
that NCC’s Land Information System is populated with accurate and complete
data for the sub region, including required digital layers; - Ensure
all liability issues are dealt with promptly and accurate records are
maintained for insurance related matters; - Ensure
that conditions of all agreements (e.g. landholding agreements, off-road
vehicle mitigation measures; agricultural lease agreements) are
administered in a timely fashion.

Development and Fundraising

- Identify
new resources and programs to help achieve strategic conservation goals; - Assist
the Program Director in advising the Ontario Development Department
Manager of funding priorities, amounts and deadlines for ongoing
stewardship needs; - Assist
regional staff and local fundraising volunteers to identify, cultivate,
and request funds from both existing donors and new prospects, including
individuals, businesses, foundations, government sources, and
non-government organizations; - Assist
with donor property tours.

Reporting & Business Planning

- Develop
annual work plans and budgets for stewardship and science activities; - Provide
timely reports as required to regional and national staff and Boards.
5.
Community and Partnership Liaison
Community and Partnership Liaison
- Maintain
positive, productive and open relationships with landowners, lessees,
project volunteers and local partners in the sub region; - Foster
positive relationships with private and public property landowners within
priority landscapes in the sub region through personal contact, program
newsletters and other innovative approaches; - Represent
NCC on specific committees and at meetings or workshops related to land
management and conservation as required; - Communicate
regularly with NCC stewards and partners to develop and maintain good
working relations; - Represent
NCC in all appropriate external relations and communications functions
relevant to NCC’s science and stewardship activities in the sub region
(including public speaking, meetings, and media relations) to build
awareness and support for the conservation programs of NCC and its
partners.

- Work
with the Program Director and others to coordinate and manage contractors,
suppliers and summer students working on science, stewardship and other
initiatives in the sub region; - Manage
seasonal field staff to efficiently and safely complete subregional stewardship
tasks; - Other
duties as assigned by the Program Director or Ontario’s Director of
Conservation.
Skills
and Aptitudes:
and Aptitudes:
- A
Bachelor’s Degree in ecology, conservation biology, environmental science
or related discipline with 3-5 years of directly related experience; - Demonstrated
experience with Ecological Land Classification; - Superior
botanical, wildlife and/or aquatic inventory and identification skills; - Possesses
(or is willing to obtain) an Ontario pesticide exterminator license in the
landscape and/or forestry category (http://www.ontariopesticide.com/index.cfm/exterminator-training/); - Familiar
with COSEWIC and COSSARO designated species and recovery plans; - Familiar
with Ontario’s Natural Heritage Information Centre, NatureServe and other
sources of biodiversity information; - Knowledge
of the principles of conservation biology and planning; - Demonstrated
experience in compiling information and reporting on natural areas; - Experience
implementing property or natural area management plans; - Experience
in delivering land/resource management programs in a rural community; - Previous
experience working with land owners to implement land use / land
management changes preferred; - Project
management skills, including excellent problem solving, planning and
organizational skills, and attention to detail and timelines; - Demonstrated
ability to manage staff and/or volunteers; - Comfort
working in a team setting and capable of easily communicating with a wide
range of people from the public and private sectors; - Excellent
communication skills; - Flexibility,
reliability, self-motivation, and ability to work independently; - Proficient
with MS Office Suite; - Entrepreneurial,
with a strong ability to prepare and manage timelines, goals and
expectations wisely; - Must
be prepared to travel, work flexible hours at times and work in remote and
rugged areas; - A
boating license and/or strong boating/paddling skills is an asset; - A
valid Ontario Drivers’ Licence is necessary; - Committed
