About Teach A
Man To Fish

Teach A Man To Fish supports schools to establish school-based enterprises
which serve as both practical learning platforms for students and as
income-generating activities for the school. These school enterprises – from
beekeeping through to eggs, vegetables or carpentry workshops – enable students
to gain business experience in each area alongside their academic and technical
education. In this way students learn valuable entrepreneurial skills and the
school is able to contribute to their own costs in a sustainable way. Our philosophy
is: give a man a fish and he´ll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he´ll
eat for a lifetime.

Background
Teach A Man To Fish will be working with 28 schools in Nyaruguru district in
order to develop business plans and implement school businesses as part of the
‘Rwandan Girl´s Education Advancement Project´. These school businesses will
generate income for the schools and act as an educational resource for the
students, developing their technical, business and soft skills. Teach A Man To
Fish are partnering with Health Poverty Action on this DFID funded project.

Teach A Man To Fish is looking to recruit 2 x Enterprise Development Technical Officers that
will be based in HPA´s Nyaruguru office, and will work closely with HPA staff
based in Nyaruguru and Kigali, as well as Teach A Man To Fish staff in the UK.

Main Functions
of post

o To be a confident practitioner of the Teach A Man To Fish school business
model
o To manage the planning and implementation of school businesses across 28
schools

Responsibilities
Within Teach A Man To Fish´s Vision, Mission, Strategies and Policies, the
responsibilities of the post are:

Specific
– Support the training of PTA´s in business planning and implementation
– Administer and facilitate the development of business plans for schools
– Support the implementation and development of businesses in schools
– Coordinate effectively with Health Poverty Action in the management and
implementation of the school business project
– Implement monitoring and evaluation activities as requested by Teach A Man To
Fish

Generic
– Provide weekly/monthly reports to the line manager in a timely manner
– Complete monthly Technical Officer communication duties including blog and
social media posts
– Carry out other activities as directed by Teach A Man To Fish

Person
specification

Essential
– Fluent spoken and written English
– Experience managing or working with small or medium sized businesses in a
developing country
– Experience working with schools
– Experience delivering training and capacity building
– Experience managing transparent financial processes
– Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team
– Commitment to working with marginalised people, in isolated remote areas
– A proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision
– Strong IT skills and familiarity with Word & Excel
– Willingness to live in a remote rural area in Rwanda

Desirable
– Prior experience of working with an international NGO
– Fluent spoken and written Kinyarwanda (highly desirable)
– Motorcycle licence/permit (highly desirable)
– Fluent spoken and written French
– Prior knowledge of the Teach A Man To Fish School Business Model
– Prior knowledge of the rural Rwandan context
