The Regional Program Office of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Liberia is part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland. SDC carries out international development cooperation activities and is responsible for the humanitarian aid delivered by the Swiss Confederation. SDC’s programme in Liberia aims to help the country make the transition from recovery to development. It focuses on health, nutrition, water and regional
aspects. For the support of its new project which focuses on the physical rehabilitation of swamps’ irrigation systems in Lofa and Nimba Counties, SDC offers the following position:
JOB DESCRIPTION:
•Manages and leads the Agricultural Liaison Unit of the project
•Provides ad-hoc technical support to farmers groups in all aspects of lowland rice cultivation
•Identifies shortfalls and bottlenecks in agricultural production in rehabilitated schemes
•Participates in initial assessments
•Participates in community meetings, jointly with partner agencies, contributes to community mobilization
•Prepares training modules and make materials available
•Conducts training courses in crop and water management for extension agents
•Liaises to partner agencies, in particular the Ministry of Agriculture and United Nations FAO, for all agricultural aspects of project activities
•Organizes workshops and other events for knowledge exchange
•Participates in coordination meetings
•Establishes/maintains close contacts with partners providing agricultural inputs and coordinates with line agencies and groups of beneficiaries
Job Requirement:
Specific Qualifications:
•Master or Bachelor of Science in Agriculture or equivalent background
•Minimum 5 years of work experience in agricultural production, with emphasis on rice production
•Understanding of rural context, skills and experience in community mobilization
•Very good capacities for designing and conducting training events at all levels
General qualifications:
•Willingness to travel frequently to construction sites and to walk to remote sites with no road access, including overnight stays in remote locations if required
•Willingness to promote team work and to share information and knowhow with all involved stakeholders
•Good writing and communications skills in English
•Good computer skills
•Non-Liberian must have the required work and/or residency permits
