Positions 1-3 (university students)
• Start Date: May 9, 2016, 16 weeks, 40 hours per week, $16/hour
Positions 4-5 (high school student or recent grad)
• Start Date: June 20, 2016, 10 weeks, 40 hours per week, $13/hour
JOB DESCRIPTIONS:
The students will assist with wildlife research, environmental stewardship, and
community engagement activities on the Sunshine Coast. They will participate in
field surveys of wildlife to characterize species presence and distribution,
and identify critical sites for wildlife on the Sunshine Coast. The students
will participate in some of the following project activities: amphibian
terrestrial and aquatic surveys, turtle nesting and live trapping surveys, bat
roost counts and acoustic surveys, owl and goshawk call-playback surveys and
nest searches, collection of eDNA samples from creeks and wetlands, and habitat
assessment and mapping. The students will also participate in habitat
enhancement activities, including shoreline naturalization, wetland
restoration, and installation of bat houses, and owl and swallow nest boxes.
Finally, they will participate in outreach to Sunshine Coast residents to
encourage sound stewardship of wildlife and their habitats, including
workshops, childr en’s programs, and outreach tables at community events.
QUALIFICATIONS: We are seeking 3 highly-motivated university students pursuing
undergraduate or graduate studies in Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Forestry,
Environmental Sciences, Resource Management, or related field. We are also
recruiting for 2 high school students or recent high school graduates seeking
to enter one of these fields. Candidates must be physically fit, able to work
independently, available to work some weekends and nights and in all weather
conditions, and extremely comfortable working in the outdoors. Previous
experience conducting field surveys of wildlife preferred. Previous experience
working with the public a plus. Driver’s license and access to own vehicle a
plus.
ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible to apply for this position, applicants must be
between 15 AND 30 YEARS OF AGE at the start of the employment; have been
registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to
return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; be Canadian
citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been
conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and be legally
entitled to work in Canada. These summer student positions are partially funded
by the Canada Summer Jobs program and are dependent upon us being awarded the
funding again this year.

ABOUT THE SUNSHINE COAST WILDLIFE PROJECT: Since 2006, the Sunshine Coast
Wildlife Project and has been taking action to conserve, restore and enhance
habitat on the Sunshine Coast and implement on-the-ground threat abatement
measures to ensure the survival of wildlife species. Activities include
wildlife surveys and monitoring, habitat restoration and enhancement, public
engagement, and community-based stewardship. Wildlife Project Goals are: (1) To
Identify, Protect, Restore & Enhance Wildlife Habitat by conducting surveys
to identify occupied sites and delineate critical habitat and by working with
stakeholders and community members to maintain, restore and enhance these
habitats; (2) To Sustain Populations of Target Species in the long-term by
assessing populations and taking action to mitigate threats and work with
residents and stakeholders to ensure that appropriate management and recovery
strategies are implemented; and (3) To Educate & Engage Community Members,
incre asing public awareness of the conservation status and habitat needs of
local wildlife species, and encouraging stewardship through partnerships,
outreach, and community involvement.
