Sumas
First Nation (SFN) requires the services of a Project Coordinator for the
Sema:th Traditional Use and Occupancy Study (TUOS). The TUOS is a critical
project that will document and celebrate our member’s his

torical relationship
to the land, and to demonstrate how that relationship has changed over time and
why. By building our research capacity and developing GIS-based mapping of our
traditional sites, the TUOS will ultimately increase SFN’s referral’s
management capacity when responding to major development projects in Sema:th
Territory. Critical duties of this position including developing a community
based Indigenous Research Methodology, supervising a research analyst,
implementing culturally sensitive data collection and analysis, presenting
findings and developing a final report. The Coordinator will facilitate
training opportunities, conducting background research, conduct interviews with
elders and knowledge holders, and work with consultants and project partners to
develop an accessible database of cultural knowledge. This is a 9 month
full-time position that reports to the Sema:th Lands & Resources Manager.

Responsibilities:
  • Plays
    a lead role in the implementation of the Sema:th TUOS, including all
    administrative, logistical, and coordinating tasks involved;
  • Hires
    a research analyst as per project funding and provides overall supervision
    and work planning;
  • Develops
    a Data Collection Manual outlining an Indigenous based Research
    Methodology;
  • Organizes
    and facilitates community meeting updates and the creation of the TUOS
    Committee, including drafting the Terms of Reference, Oaths, and ongoing
    committee meetings;
  • Assist
    Sema:th community in identifying and prioritizing current and emerging
    land use conflicts within Sema:th Territory to inform Sema:th referrals
    management and strategic planning activities;
  • Develops
    and utilizes a culturally sensitive and appropriate communication and
    engagement strategy to update community members and to raise awareness and
    promote participation in TUOS project;
  • Conducts
    and summarizes background research in an annotated bibliography and for
    the TUOS Final Report;
  • Works
    with TUOS committee and community members to define and map traditional
    land use categories, cultural knowledge sharing protocols;
  • Provides
    logistical coordination and administration of training and other capacity
    development opportunities for project staff and community members;
  • Coordinates
    with staff and community members to organize and facilitate interviews and
    field visits with elders, community members, and knowledge holders;
  • Collects,
    analyzes and interprets qualitative data;
  • Liaises
    with and provides logistical and technical support to staff from the
    Sto:lo Research and Resource Management Centre (SRRMC) and other project
    consultants to ensure accurate data collection, data input and mapping
    needs are met;
  • Presents
    project summary, approach, key findings and recommendations in TUOS Final
    Report;
  • Reports
    on Program outcomes and successes as per funding requirements;
  • Other
    tasks as required.
Minimum
Qualifications and Experience:
  • A
    University Degree in the field of Social Sciences, with relevant, recent
    and significant experience conducting qualitative data collection and
    analysis, or an acceptable combination of education, training and
    professional experience;
  • Relevant,
    recent and significant experience in conducting culturally appropriate
    data collection, analysis and interpretation;
  • Familiarity
    with Stó:l? and Sema:th perspectives in relation to traditional lands and
    referrals management;
  • Sensitivity
    towards culturally appropriate and respectful practices involving the
    gathering and handling of cultural knowledge is a must;
  • Proven
    experience in project management, supervision, ability to meet deadlines,
    manage resources and meet reporting requirements is a must;
  • Must
    be proficient in both verbal and written communication. Suitable
    experience with MS Office Suite and internet applications is a must;
  • Ability
    to maintain a good working relationship with co-workers, consultants and
    other stakeholders is a must;
  • Must
    possess and maintain a valid BC Driver’s License and submit an acceptable
    Drivers Abstract;
  • Must
    successfully pass the pre-employment RCMP Criminal Records Check.
This
is a 9 month position. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications,
education and experience.
