he Horn of Africa – SIHA Network – is a coalition of
civil society organisations from Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea,
Ethiopia, Somalia, Somaliland and Uganda. Founded in 1995, the organisation
advocates for social change and gender equality in the Horn region and works
specifically on protecting women’s human rights, promoting women’s access to
justice, supporting economic empowerment and activating women’s political
participation. SIHA’s secretariat/HQ is located in Kampala, Uganda and SIHA
maintains field offices in Sudan and South Sudan.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Implement SIHA
communication activities in collaboration with the SIHA team and member
organizations across the Horn of Africa region. - Actively monitor
and respond to news items and trends in key SIHA priority countries, using
current events and contextual knowledge to shape policy statements, public
statements, and other communication activities. - Suggest and lead
advocacy actions on behalf of SIHA members and secretariat office. - Significantly
contribute to the drafting of a number of SIHA annual publications. - Edit, review and
supervise the quality assurance of all SIHA published work. - Manage and
update SIHA website and Twitter account. - Prepare and
disseminate SIHA online monthly newsletter. - Actively
contribute to advocacy campaign planning and activities. - Support in
program and project work implementation as required. - Maintain an up
to date e-mail list and contact details of all member organizations,
associates, donors, institutional partners, and other SIHA associates. - Regularly
communicate to SIHA members and support their advocacy efforts through
field visits, meetings, and e-mail/phone communications as required. - Work closely
with SIHA teams across the Horn region and establish communication with
SIHA offices and area coordinators.
Qualifications,
Skills and Experience:
Skills and Experience:
- The candidates
should have three years of work experience in human rights advocacy and
communication. - The ideal
applicant should hold a degree or post graduate degree in social sciences
and/or humanities is essential. - Significant
experience working in advocacy in Horn of Africa countries in particular
is an advantage. - The ideal
candidate for this position should have strong advocacy skills, good
understanding of regional and international human rights mechanisms, and
should possess a genuine interest and knowledge of the Horn of Africa
socio-political context. - She or he should
have proven English writing abilities and strong editing and reviewing
abilities. - The candidate
for this position should be able to observe current events and trends in
the Horn of Africa regarding the human rights and well-being of women and
girls, and translate this knowledge to advocacy initiatives and effective
communication with SIHA members and affiliates. - She / he should
possess strong networking skills, team work abilities, cross cultural
sensitivity and ability to interact effectively with women and men across
the Horn of Africa. - The applicant
should finally be highly motivated, dynamic and be capable of taking
initiative (‘self-starting’) in developing effective communication
strategies.
