Reports To: Opco CTO

Job Summary:

This role will be responsible
for the production of High Level and Low Level network designs and
implementation across our existing transmission platforms focussing on
Ethernet/IP/MPLS solutions. Successful applicant will be required to have
experience working in a telecommunications environment, dealing with technical
issues. You will be required to have specific technical knowledge of IP, MPLS,
VPN, clock synchronization, routing and switching. Cisco certifications (CCNA
or CCNP) would be strongly preferred. Occasional travel will be required to
support other OpCo’s in East Africa and develop professional relationships.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide
    higher technical support to NOC and other operations teams with regards to
    IP/MPLS infrastructure and escalate to vendors the major issues.
  • Articulate
    In depth knowledge of IP/MPLS protocols, NMS systems, firewalls, Cisco
    works, CIC etc.
  • Layer 2
    and 3 VPN understanding.
  • Implement
    VoIP and IP Telephony in a Telco and Large IP Networks including
    integration and configuration.
  • Execute
    configuration changes and software issues fixes.
  • Supervise
    IP/MPLS services’ implementation covering the installations, testing &
    handover.
  • Perform
    the handover acceptance for new implementation.
  • Proactively
    perform corrective maintenance for IP/MPLS network.
  • Contact
    vendors for support and faulty equipment’s replacement.
  • Review
    network design, highlight issues and recommend for fixes.
  • Produce
    periodic reports about the network activities, network performance and
    capacity.
  • Analyses
    of complex network issues and recommend for solution.
  • Review
    and evaluate all ITC technical documents related to IP/MPLS network.
  • Review
    and update ITC network documentation covering the drawings, technical
    documents and as-built documents.
  • Supervise
    the tasks related to planned activities in the network.
  • Execute
    the plans of preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Communicating
    and enforcing Smiles IT security policies and principals.
  • Providing
    any other ad hoc duties assigned to you from time to time by the CTO or
    any other person appointed by the Company for this purpose.

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Service
    availability  as per agreed KPIs/SLAs.
  • Timely
    resolution of outages and other issues affecting the service within agreed
    SLAs.
  • Team
    Capability development.
  • Adherence
    to Smiles IT Service Management processes and policies.

Qualifications:

  • Degree
    in IT, Computer or Telecommunication related field.
  • At
    least 7 years relevant experience with at least 4 years at
    managerial/supervisory level.

Technical Competencies:

  • Must
    have CCNP or CCIP certificate.
  • Ability
    to maintain a large network with complex network technology.
  • Excellent
    TCP/ IP networking skills.
  • Experience
    with MPLS technology including L2/L3 VPN and traffic engineering.
  • Excellent
    skills in configuring and troubleshooting Cisco routers and switches.
  • Experience
    with Cisco Switches series.
  • Experience
    with routing protocols (OSPF, RIP, EIGRP, ISIS and BGP).
  • Expertise
    in QOS design and configuration is a plus.

Person Specification:

  • Hands
    on approach. Ability and willingness to roll up sleeves and work on
    trouble shooting issues.
  • Strong
    Communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Good
    Analytical Skills – Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills.
  • Ability
    to work within a team of IT professionals.
