season. We are looking for people passionate about the earth, who love working
outdoors, and who are not afraid to work hard and get dirty in the field.
Applicants must have a genuine interest in learning the practical and
theoretical aspects of growing and marketing healthy organic food on a market
garden scale.
Our land is located in the village of Salem, Ontario, a 20 minute drive north
of Guelph, and approximately 1 hour 45 minutes north-west of Toronto. Most
activity at Plowshare centres around our 3 acre vegetable garden, which we
cultivate using our two work-horses Sally and Milly, a small rototiller, and
lots of sweat and muscle. We sell our vegetables through our Community
Supported Agricultures program, as well as at the Orangeville Farms Market.
There is also a small horse boarding/riding facility onsite with 6 riding
horses, as well as two pet goats, and several dogs and cats.
We are committed to making this internship a genuine educational opportunity,
tailored to individuals interns specific areas of interest. Interns will have
the opportunity to participate in every aspect of the farm, including CSA
promotions and advertisement, garden planning, seeding and greenhouse work,
transplanting, cultivation, working with our draft-horses, irrigation,
harvesting and post harvest handling, attending farmers markets and CSA
deliveries, as well as finances and budgeting.
Farm education at Plowshare happens in many different ways: Interns have access
to our extensive library of books and periodicals, and there will be regular
group garden walks throughout the season. Each month we have two days set aside
exclusively for educational purposes. One of these is a CRAFT day, where we
visit and tour different CRAFT farms with different themed workshops and tours.
The second educational day is left open, to be decided by the interns specific
topics of interest. And of course there is much informal education to goes on
through the everyday work and conversations on the farm. Interns are provided
with room and board as well as a weekly stipend.
