the knowledge and skills most relevant to public policy analysis and the economics of technology and innovation.
Built around core courses for all PhD fellows, the programme offers training in research skills and methods, as well as specialized courses in governance and the economics of technology. The programme has two specializations leading to the PhD in Public Policy and Policy Analysis at MGSoG, or Economics and Policy Studies of Technical Change at UNU-MERIT. In both cases the PhD is accredited by Maastricht University.
During their first year, students complete a basic compulsory training programme conducted by leading scholars of the host and partner universities. These courses are taught in Maastricht and spread across two semesters.
The programme trains students to become both scholars and practitioners in the fields of governance and the economics of technology. The focus of both the training and research aspects of the programme is on making systems economically, financially and socially more sustainable. A core objective of the programme is to create a critical mass of researchers, specialized in governance, social protection and social policy, innovation, technology and development, who are able to become leading researchers in the field and to provide advice based on sound results. The PhD programme is a three-year Maastricht-based programme taught in English. It starts on 1st September each year.
Degree
At the end of the programme, the doctoral degree will be awarded by the Maastricht University upon successful defence of the thesis.
New UNIDO Specialization on Structural Change and Industrialization
Programme:
• Year 1: In the first semester, students follow the usual joint programme. At the start of the second semester, students select their courses. UNIDO fellows are obliged to take the UNIDO specialization, which is also open to other fellows. All usual programme conditions apply.
• Year 2: UNIDO fellows are obliged to complete an internship of between 3-6 months at UNIDO (Vienna).
Priority topics:
UNIDO PhD fellows are required to submit research proposals and conduct PhD research in areas that reflect contemporary industrial development issues. These relate to challenges and opportunities such as:
• The impact of industrialization on productivity, employment and equitable inclusive growth;
• Ongoing industrial process, including the decoupling of industrial value chain tasks;
• Processes of inter- and intra-sectoral structural change and their determinants;
• Processes associated with industrial technological change (e.g., innovation, transfer and diffusion);
• The emergence of new players in industrial production and trade;
• Matters related to industrial policy issues, dynamics and determinants of sustainable industrial development in developing countries and countries with economies in transition, including environmental concerns in industrial develop¬ment strategies, and energy efficiency and green industry related issues.
Eligibility criteria:
The programme is open to applicants from developing countries and countries in economic transition willing to conduct PhD research in one of the priority topics indicated above. The UNIDO positions will be funded by a joint UNIDO / UNU-MERIT Scholarship.
