Position summary
The Director of Research is responsible
for ensuring that PIH/IMB is driven by a vision and mission to undertake
research that will respond to the needs of the poor in society while helping to
strengthen national health systems. The Director of Research Department at
PIH/IMB responsibility is to ensure that the organization research agenda
contributes and complements the national research policy and agenda and is
aligned to global health science. Guided by the organization core mission and
values the director will lead the department to become a center of excellence
in operational research to improve the health and welfare of the communities we
serve.

Capacity building primarily for Rwandans but in addition for other researchers
that we collaborate with. The primary role will be to lead a team that
innovates, develops and delivers research capacity programs as well as specific
research initiatives. The scope of this work is to drive
implementation/operational research in order to improve access to health care,
improve the health care delivery efficiency and develop the capacity of local
researchers and future global health researchers. Currently PIH/IMB has
clinical programs in global health, community health, NCD’s, Oncology, mental
health, neonatology and health systems strengthening. The research function
will align with these programs to undertake quantitative and qualitative
research to generate knowledge out of implementation. PIH/IMB in Rwanda works
through strong collaborations with the MOH, Rwanda Biomedical center and University
of Rwanda as well as the University of Global Health Equity. Outside of Rwanda
we collaborate with the Global Health Delivery Partnership (GHDP) including
Harvard University (Department of Global Health and Social Medicine- Harvard
Medical School), Brigham women’s (Division of Global health Equity) and
Children’s Hospital (Fellowship program).

Responsibilities
- Provide
the vision and mission for the research function within PIH/IMB and build
a team of passionate individuals to drive programs and innovative capacity
building approaches - Develop
internal collaborations within PIH/IMB with the medical and community
programs to develop qualitative and quantitative research ideas and
proposals - Build
strong collaborations with partners in Rwanda and abroad and in particular
align to the needs of MOH/RBC and UoR in terms of research needs for
Rwanda that will be relevant to policy and practice.. - Lead
the development of a strong research administration function that can
support multiple research initiatives in multiple sites - Lead
the effort to seek and compete for research grants in Rwanda and beyond
and ensure proper grants management for these grants - Lead
the effort to build capacity of the research team to undertake a diversity
of complex initiatives as well as to find and deploy principal and
associate investigators - Play
a coordinating role with UGHE to support mutual research programs and
approaches as well as for research faculty development - Provide
strategic and operational support to research department in the
development of the annual work-plan and budgets - Supervise
the research administrator responsible for research administration across
all PIH programs and sites as well as any external research involving
patients, populations and databases from Rwanda. - Plan
for and lead capacity building for PIH and affiliated researchers.
Qualifications
- Advanced
degree in the health sciences, public health or social sciences. PhD
candidates are preferred - Substantive
experience within a health-related research field, preferably in a
low-income setting - Significant
knowledge of global health research, implementation science and research
administration - Experience
in conducting research and translating that research into manuscripts,
policy briefs and influencing practice
- Experience
in working closely with national ministries and universities will confer
an advantage - Self-driven,
confident and articulate with the ability to work with minimal supervision - Exceptional
communication skills (Oral and written) - Demonstrated
ability to collaborate with professionals at all levels in diverse
settings; must be flexible, reliable, responsive, and resourceful - Willingness
to work in a rural setting in Rwanda with extensive travel in the region
and globally - Professional
fluency in English, French and Kinyarwanda preferred.
