OPIRG (OPIRG Provincial/OPIRG Network) is hiring for a a part-time contract,

of renewal. This role, broadly, assists in Network-wide communications,

Organization:
in the 1970s, the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG) is a
provincial charitable non-profit corporation whose membership is comprised of
eleven campus-based chapter PIRGs in Ontario. Each campus-based PIRG operates
independently in promoting campus and community-based research, educational
activities, and action on a variety of social justice and environmental justice
issues. As the formal network to which all local PIRGs belong, the purpose of
OPIRG is to provide training, support, and foster cooperation between PIRGs on
these issues.
Term:
starting date — January 1, 2017 to February 28, 2018
Guelph, Hamilton, Ottawa, or Kitchener-Waterloo ON (or nearby community with
ability to travel).
Specifics:
is a part-time contract, management position for a duration of just over one
year, with the possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement and the completion
of a performance evaluation. The contract includes 450 hours of work over the
course of the year, with on average 30 hours per month. The rate of pay will be
in accordance with the base starting salary for all OPIRG staff, at $22.29. A
small budget for expenses associated with the work including office supplies
and transportation is also provided.
Provincial Coordinator reports directly to the Provincial Supervisory Committee
but ultimately to the OPIRG Board of Directors. The Provincial Coordinator is
expected to provide their own computer, phone and workspace in order to carry
out the duties of the position. Some expenses, including long distance phone
charges are eligible for reimbursement. Some evening and weekend work is
required, specifically attendance at the AGM and Provincial Board meetings,
which typically occur in October and February in Toronto. Travel to other
meetings and to PIRG chapters may be required.
and Responsibilities:
Provincial Co-ordinator has a range of responsibilities to the network. It
includes components of administration, coordination, and communication. On an
annual basis, the Provincial Coordinator will develop with the Supervisory
Committee a work plan with timelines and evaluation measures for the priority
activities agreed upon for that year. It is also understood that the skills and
background of the Provincial Coordinator will be considered when developing the
work plan to maximise the conditions for success of the employee and the
network.
roles (60%):
- Coordinate,
and provide support to, the Network’s committees between Provincial
Meetings. - Supporting
Chapters by providing access to resources such as information about
organizational development, funding opportunities, and campaign and
referendum organizing techniques. - Research
and share the best-practices and innovative approaches from Chapters with
others in the Network. - Develop
a strong familiarity with the OPIRG by-laws, policies and any Operating
Manuals to assist in adherence to them at meetings of the Provincial
Board, its committees, and to OPIRG chapter Boards and Chapter Staff when
applicable. - Develop
a strong familiarity with the OPIRG and CUPE 1281 Collective Agreement to
assist OPIRG Chapter Boards, as requested by the chapters, and Provincial
Board Council. - Provide
coordination and logistical support for the Network’s Public Interest
Schools, the Board Training School and Networking Meetings.
roles (20%):
- Be
the first point of contact for the Network; responding to email queries
and all other correspondence. - Ensuring
all members of the OPIRG Board of Directors can access the OPIRG wiki and
all important documentation related to network activities. - Monitor
and participate as needed in the OPIRG Provincial Board email listserv. - Assist
Portfolio holding chapters with OPIRG website and listservs
roles (20%):
- Attend
at least one day of each of the Provincial Meetings (PBM and AGM), provide
reports to these meetings as appropriate and provide administrative
support while in attendance, primarily by documenting meetings and taking
minutes. - Work
with the Chapters hosting the AGM and PBM to help coordinate required
meeting materials. - Meet
monthly with the Supervisory Committee to report on activities,
problem-solve challenges, and maintain and submit to the Supervisory
Committee a record of hours worked. - Maintain
the OPIRG wiki site Google Sites-hosted wiki and assist with archiving
activities related to the wiki.
- Experience
with the OPIRG Board of Directors or equivalent knowledge based on
experience as a PIRG Chapter member is a major asset. - Demonstrated
knowledge of the OPIRG mission, policies and structure. - Demonstrated
ability to work without direct supervision to create priorities and
accomplish tasks. - Demonstrated
experience with administration and governance in a non-profit setting and
unionized environment. - Experience
with campus or community organizing, and knowledge of grassroots activism. - Proficient
in the use of email, wiki pages, and word processing. - Ability
to communicate clearly and efficiently over email. - Ability
to summarize and simplify complex ideas and documents in order to
communicate them in writing or verbally. - Ability
to develop relationships by electronic and phone communications. - Ability
to travel to Provincial meetings as required. (Meetings usually occur in
Toronto during the months of October, February and May) - Proficient
in taking accurate and clear minutes for Board meetings. - Bilingualism
(French and English) an asset.
