About the role
As the world around us changes, so must we. With a bold new vision in place, we’re finding exciting new ways to deliver something exceptional ‘for the benefit of the nation’. And, by 2020, we want everyone in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to feel like a member of the National Trust. It’s a big task, but an exciting, creative, compelling one.
That’s why we need to make sure that our story is being well told, and that our messages and aims are being clearly articulated and communicated. We have to ensure that we’re actively influencing public opinion and government policy. That we’re bringing places to life, while connecting with local communities and reaching out to new audiences in exciting new ways.
Leading our communications and external affairs activities, you’ll be our external voice, telling our story and transforming the way people see us. From government, policy makers and opinion formers to stakeholders and members of the public, through broadcast, press and digital media channels, you’ll make sure that our important message is being heard and that we’re reaching the people – and places – we need to reach.
About you
We have a clear vision of where we’re going as an organisation, the stories we need to tell, the messages we have to communicate. You’ll have the drive and determination needed to help us achieve our aims. Plus the credibility and skill to take people with you on this incredible journey.
You understand the media world, how it works and how we can get our messages across. Thanks to extensive senior level media and PR experience, you’ll have an in-depth, up-to-the-minute knowledge of print, digital and broadcast media. You’ll also be able to show where you’ve delivered integrated communication campaigns (campaigns where digital media has played a central role).
Of course, media is just one side of the coin. It’s important that you have practical experience of leading external affairs activities too (complemented by a strong contact network). With charisma and authority, with intelligence and insight, you’re able to hold the attention of senior opinion formers and stakeholders. We’d also like you to have an impressive understanding of the context in which we operate, including a strong awareness of the policy issues facing the natural and historic environment.
About the National Trust
An icon. A brand with a rich history and a very exciting future. Today, we welcome over 50 million visitors every year to 700 miles of coast, more than 600,000 acres of countryside, and over 350 historic houses, gardens, nature reserves and parks. But we want even more people to enjoy these special places, to get involved with them, be inspired by them, and love them as much as we do. And all sorts of people too. That’s why we’re working hard to engage supporters and attract more and more people to join us. How will we do this? By telling our fantastic story, bringing places to life, connecting with communities and inspiring everyone to get involved.
You’ll be based at Heelis in Swindon, our award-winning central office. From the quiet courtyards and alleyways of the Old Town, to a vibrant mix of traditional shops and pubs, modern outlets and stylish cafes, there’s plenty to enjoy in Swindon – and plenty that will surprise you!
