Department:
The Technology Department is responsible for all aspects of technology in Merlin’s head office and all field sites. This includes the management and support of all IT systems, telephones, electrical safety, radio/satellite communications and positioning systems.

We also work with other departments to identify technical solutions for departmental needs and work with colleagues in other departments to project manage the implementation of software and hardware required.

The volunteer position is an exciting opportunity to gain a wide experience in many aspects of the IT industry and how it is applied within the Humanitarian Sector. There are also opportunities to attend training session about Merlin’s work in developing countries.

Main purpose of the role:
This role is based in Merlin’s Head Office in London and will be supporting a network of 120 workstations, 3 servers, a PBX telephone system and associated networking infrastructure. The networking environment is Microsoft with servers running Windows 2008 R2 and workstations running Windows XP/Win 7. We operate a combination of in house servers and a remote data centre which houses AD & Exchange servers and back-up servers.

There is an external helpdesk providing first level support for end users. The key function of this role is to carry out routine maintenance, ensure consistently applied policies, maintain assets and to support head office
IT projects.

Overall Objectives (scope):
• To update Kaspersky Antivirus on 40 machines and apply policies.
• Provide 3rd level technical support to end users.
• Work with IT provider to conduct health checks on workstations and resolve any issues identified.
• Assist with the deployment of new hardware and roll out of software.
• Back up old data from dormant users accounts and archive.
• Audit all computer assets and update the technology database.
• Provide guidance & training for head office staff on the use of software packages such as Outlook, Office, SharePoint and Skype.
