The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds
to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and
rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC
offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee
from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, we
restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to
endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home.

In the last five months record floods in Nigeria
progressed from medium-scale, community-based crises – to large-scale flooding
that has affected more than half of Nigeria’s 36 states. Millions of people
were affected, many fleeing their homes and belongings to seek refuge in
schools and public buildings away from the floodwaters. After several months of
displacement, the floodwaters have receded in many places, and families have
begun to return to their villages, where they find their homes and fields
destroyed.

IRC entered Nigeria at the end of October 2012 and,
in accordance with EPRU’s commitment to prioritizing assistance based on need,
conducted assessments in rural areas identified to be in greatest need. IRC
found severe needs in flood-devastated impoverished rural areas — in remote
locations where the poorest of the poor live.
