Job Description:
The Experience of a lifetime! We are seeking mature and dedicated individuals seeking challenging but rewarding summer job opportunities and who possess a keen interest in literacy and teaching as well as rural
development work to fill the positions of Labourer-Teachers in the Frontier College Labourer-Teacher program for 2012.

Labourer-Teachers work as paid manual labourers during the day on farms in Southwestern and Central Ontario. In addition to the physical work, they volunteer their time to provide educational and recreational opportunities for their co-workers who are predominantly migrant farm workers from Mexico and the Caribbean. Candidates will receive intensive pre-placement training and support during the placement (24 hour on-call support).

Suggested Qualifications:
• Some post-secondary education
• Teaching/Tutoring experience
• Experience with community development and volunteer organizations
• Background in physical labour/relevant physical pursuits; farm positions are physically challenging and usually require some heavy lifting and repetitive motions: please note that you will be required to provide a doctor’s note stating that you are mentally and physically able to fulfill the requirements of the position.
• Ability to live and work closely with others, especially in multicultural settings. Farmer/employer provides housing where male LT’s share bunk houses with other workers. Female LT’s will be provided separate rooming by the farmer.
• Ability to live and work in rural Ontario
• Basic knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not mandatory
• Excellent judgment and interpersonal skills/ high level of maturity
• Demonstrated ability to work to high standards without daily supervision and to take initiative; most farmers employ only one Labourer-Teacher.
• Ability to drive is helpful but not mandatory
• Accountability and reporting to the program staff is required; learner assessments and program reports

Terms and Remuneration:
• $10.25 per hr.
• Housing is provided by employer
• The Labourer-Teacher Program assists participants with travel costs
• Long hours mainly during the summer (May1 to Aug.18); up to 12 hours per day in peak season, 6 to 7 days per wk.
• Some positions may be available into the fall
