i.)        
File: This is a means of storing information in a secured format. A file can
be in a form of soft copy (computer file) and hard copy (paper file).

ii.)       
Master File: A master file is a type of file which contains the
main information of a particular subject or class of data. The information in a
master file includes descriptive data, such as the name and the address, in
most cases, a master file is content a brief round up of information contained
in the file. The major components of a master file are generally indexed for
easy retrieval of information contained in the master file.
iii.)      
Transaction File:  This is a
type of file which is used to store information which is basically transaction
records. The information which are usually entered in this file are use to
update the master files.  This type of
file is usually important because it serves as an audit trails and history for information
stored in the master file, since it contains details of description of
information which is entered in the master file.
iv.)     
File Merging: File merging
which is sometimes referred to as file integration is a type of file processing
operation that is used to cater for changes that may occur when a files
modified, by more than one person. This modification can happen at the same
time or at different times. In file merging, the resulting single file must
contain all the important information in the multiple files with are merged in
the process of file merging.
v.)       
File Updating: This is changes made to a document by adding,
removing or upgrading information to a more recent version. In doing this,
extreme care must be taken to ensure that valuable information are not lost or
unnecessarily tempered with.
vi.)     
File Maintenance: File maintenance refers to the periodic updating of
master files. For example, adding or deleting. It does not refer to daily
transaction processing and batch processing (order processing, billing, etc.).
vii.)    
File Creation: File creation can be done offline such as that of
typical hard copy file or through the computer as in soft copy format. The
process of arranging information in a format that is easily identified located
and identified for further purposes.
viii.)    File Sorting: This includes ordering (arranging items in a sequence ordered by some
criterion) and
categorizing (grouping items with similar properties). This
process entails arranging information systematically.
ix.)       
File Interrogating: File interrogation is eliciting useful information
using different techniques to further understand the subject or the content of
the file.
x.)       
File Querying: File
querying is a process that allows individuals to quickly and easily view,
analyze and modify files (delimited or fixed-width) directly, as though they
were in a database.
