Description
A
PhD Research Fellowship is available at the Department of Culture Studies and
Oriental Languages (IKOS), University of Oslo. We seek to recruit a candidate
with excellent research qualifications who will investigate the role of religion
in human rights discourses in fora at the Uni

ted Nations or national discourses
on UN conventions.

The
person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty’s organized research
training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended
at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. Read more about the

The
appointment is for the duration of three years.
Thematic
focus
The
successful applicant will address the issues identified in the main project, ‘Value Politics: The role of religion in internationalrelations’. Value Politics addresses the construction of religion in
relation to the United Nations, both in terms of the new emphasize on religion
from the 1990s onwards as well as a broader historical approach to religion at
the United Nations. The project aim is to delineate what counts as ‘religious’
and trace the changing meaning and scope of religion as it is construed within
political discourse and put to practice in local settings around the world.
The
applicant will design a project based on work with United Nations archives
and/or interviews in New York, Geneva or relevant national contexts. The
project should explore how new conceptions of religion are negotiated in
relation to one of the following three particularly controversial topics:
freedom of religion; family policy or women’s rights.
The
successful candidate will join and take active part in the project’s research
community, joining collegial meetings and seminars.
Requirements
  • A
    Master’s degree or equivalent in history of religions or other relevant
    disciplines.
  • The
    Master’s Degree has to have been awarded by the time of application.
    Candidates who have already obtained a PhD degree or submitted a PhD
    thesis in a similar field will not be considered for this fellowship.

assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:
  • The
    project’s scientific merits and creative potential
  • The
    project’s relevance to the research focus of Value Politics
  • The
    applicant’s academic and personal qualifications
  • The
    applicant’s ability to complete the project and research training within the
    time frame
  • The
    applicant’s collaboration skills and ability/willingness to join an
    interdisciplinary academic community
Applicants
who have recently graduated with excellent results may be given preference.
Short-listed
candidates will be called in for an interview at the University of Oslo or we
will arrange for an interview on Skype.
