Context
Concern Universal’s (CU) vision is a world where justice, dignity and respect prevail for all. Working in partnership, CU challenges poverty and inequality by supporting practical actions that enable people to improve their lives and shape their own futures. Founded in 1976, CU currently operates from 10 country programmes in Africa, Asia and South America, as well as in the UK. By working directly with partners and communities to identify real opportunities for lasting and positive change, we facilitate a variety of projects that promote a number of issues, including food security , access to water and sanitation, respect for human rights and microfinance.
Over the past 10 years the scale and complexity of CU’s operation has grown steadily. For the years 2009/10 and 2010/11, total programme expenditure was £12 million benefiting 1.5 million people. Today there are approximately 120 ongoing contracted projects, with support from almost 100 institutional donors (including the European Union, Department for International Development/UK, Australian Agency for International Development, Irish Aid and Big Lottery Fund) from five continents. Whilst the responsibility for the successful implementation of these projects lies with the country offices, the CU Hereford office provides a critical support and coordination role.
Building from our extensive practical experience, CU has increasingly sought to influence and inspire others by amplifying the voices of people living in poverty. We do this in collaboration with others by promoting more effective action by development agencies, calling for more socially, environmentally and economically responsible business practice, and building a stronger global movement to combat poverty and inequality.

A new Strategic Marketing Vision (SMV) and Marketing Strategy, developed in 2011 and looking ahead to 2019, focuses on achieving consistent and sustainable growth in funding, from a wide variety of sources. A marketing team comprising the Marketing and Communications Manager, International Funding Co-ordinator and Public Fundraising Manager will work together, with members of their respective teams – e.g., the Major Donor Co-ordinator, the Marketing and Communications Assistant, the Marketing Researcher, and so on to deliver the Marketing Strategy, integrating activities across fundraising and communications.
Purpose
CU has just completed the development of its marketing vision and strategy for the eight-year period up to 2018/19. Accordingly, CU expects to significantly increase net unrestricted income, improve the reserves position, and increase total income. Teams in the Country Programmes play a leading role in sourcing project funding from institutional donors. The fundraising team in the UK coordinates CU’s efforts to access increasing levels of resources from private individuals, trusts and foundations (T&Fs), businesses and major voluntary donors. Major donors, defined as T&Fs, Philanthropists, businesses has been identified as key area in the strategy, hence the creation of this role to report to the IFC and work closely with the Marketing Researcher and other CU team members. The Major Donor Co-ordinator (MDC) role has been created to work within the marketing team and to contribute to the achievement of the targets set in the marketing vision and strategy and to continue the momentum of identifying and meeting with business leaders, philanthropists and trustees of major T&Fs, particularly at a regional level (South West, Border Counties, Midlands and South Wales, but also at National level (i.e., according to where priorities and opportunities are identified). The position holder will be expected to possess exceptional interpersonal skills, to produce excellent quality work at high speed and to contribute to the ambitious targets that CU has set for the marketing team and the organisation as a whole. S/he must be entrepreneurial, experienced, confident and capable regarding both the creation and nurturing of leads; this requires the ability to inspire and persuade people (in person, over the phone and in writing) alongside following up systematically to meet and exceed expectations. As a part of the marketing team, it is expected that the role will result to the generation of substantial restricted and unrestricted funds and achieve at least a break even position within the first year. Major donor fundraisers can reportedly achieve from 1:5 to 1:10 ratio levels; in this respect CU is aspiring to achieve high rates of effectiveness and efficiency. Key performance indicators will be agreed with the line manager as the basis of assessing progress.
