Cores of Credibility

By Akpeli Othuke Andrew
Credibility is a measure of character and competence. Character has two cores which are integrity and intent while that of competence are capabilities and results.
Integrity is a word that has been misunderstood by a lot of people in its usage. To some, integrity means ‘trust’ while to others it means ‘honesty’. While I will agree with them that integrity includes honesty, it is far more than that. It is your ability to walk your talk. It is being upright inside out. It is your ability to act according to set up clear values and belief and work according to them.
Intents are meaningfully judged by our motives, agendas and the resulting behavior emanating from them. People will learn to trust you if your motives are straightforward and are poised towards mutual benefits of all parties involve in a dealing. In essence, it is ability to care for people you interact with, lead or serve.
Capabilities are the abilities processed by an individual that inspired confidence. These include talents, attitudes, skills, knowledge and style. They are the measure to assess if result is ever to be achieved. Without capabilities, even with integrity and good motives, good result is still unattainable. Capabilities deals with ability to establish, grow, extend and restore trust.
Result is the true measure of our track record, performance and getting the right things done. Credibility is diminished unless result is achieved. When result is achieved according to our promises, a positive reputation is established.
So in what ever you do, ensure that the four cores of credibility are well represented.
