The
Trainee is responsible for patient assessment and management; communication of
assessment / management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s
care; communication with the patient and / family regarding the patient’s
condition and management plans; maintenance of accurate and relevant patient
documentation; coordination of diagnostic tests and consultations; arrangement
of patient discharge process and liaison with GP’s and other community care
services to ensure the provision of optimal patient care to patients presenting
to the  hospitals.
 The
Trainee will be directed by the Attending Medical Specialist and in turn will
direct and, if necessary, assist the Intern/RMO on their team to complete the
above.  In particular, the Trainee will be expected to be familiar with a
“multi-system” approach to the assessment and comprehensive management of
critically-ill patients; have/gain knowledge of and experience in the
performance (including indications and complications) and interpretation of a
variety of specialised investigations in critically ill patients; have/gain
knowledge in the use (including indications and complications) of a wide range
of therapeutic strategies and supportive agents commonly used; have experience
in the practical application of social and communication skills and
philosophical principles as they relate to critically ill patients; experience
and confidence in public presentation. 
The
Trainee Reliever will be located at Gosford  and Wyong Hospitals and
rotates between different sub-specialities including Emergency Medicine,
Cardiology, Haematology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Geriatrics and General
Medicine as required to provide relief.  The position of Trainee provides
high level health care to inpatients and outpatients consulted by the
clinicians.  The Trainee provides high level management of complex medical
problems and provides clinical leadership while the consultants are not
immediately available. The position may include weekends and nights as required
to ensure continuity of service delivery to the residents of the Central Coast.
To
provide effective medical services to patients under supervision, while
developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment in
inpatients and outpatient areas in the public health organisation. 
Responsibilities include:
  • Taking
    a leadership role in coordinating the admission, management and discharge
    planning of patients seen in or admitted to his / her Unit within the
    public health organisation, and ensuring that the admission and plans are
    documented in the medical record. 
  • The
    day-to-day assessment and management of the patients in his/her Unit,
    communicating with them and their family the nature of their condition and
    its treatment.
  • Communicating
    and coordinating care with their team, arranging consultation with other
    staff when appropriate, then arranging discharge and liaising with local
    medical officers and other community based care modalities.
  • All
    decisions concerning the patient(s) in consultation with their immediate
    supervisor and team.
  • Participation
    in the afterhours and relief roster.
