Blood Cancer: What Is It?

0 122

Hematologic cancer is broadly known as blood cancer; it is a general term that encompasses several types of malignancies affecting the lymphatic system, bone marrow, and blood cells. There are about 10 percent of all malignancies diagnosed that are blood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

Some blood cancer symptoms may include fever, weight loss, and enlarged lymph nodes, depending on the kind of cancer. Though not preventable, there are several ways blood cancer can be treated. The bottom line in answering if blood cancer is curable or not is that while there are some kinds that may be, the majority of them cannot be. The following are things you ought to know:

Blood Cancer Types

Most blood cancers are liquid tumors. In contrast, cancers of the breast, lung, and colon more often present as masses, lesions, and polyps.

Some blood cancers arise in the lymph nodes or other lymphoid tissues; others begin in your bone marrow, the spongy material inside your bones. Even though there are some differences among blood cancers, there are three major kinds:

Leukemia

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It may be acute or chronic, depending on how fast or slow the cancer progresses. Myeloid cells may become red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets, or lymphoid cells, which are a subgroup of white blood cells, may be affected by leukemia. There are four major types of leukemia:

  •     Acute leukemia with lymphocytic cells
  •     Leukemia with chronic lymphocytic cells
  •     Leukemia with acute myeloid
  •     Leukemia with chronic myeloid

The lymphoma

Lymphoma is one type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. It affects lymphocytes, which are white blood cells. There are two main types of lymphoma:  Professional Version of the Merck Manual. Summary of lymphoma.

  •     Hodgkin lymphoma typically begins in B cell lymphocytes.
  •     Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which begins in the B cells or T cells, can be divided into      aggressive or indolent, depending upon how slowly or rapidly it spreads and grows.

Myeloma

It is medically known as myeloma, which also encompasses multiple myeloma-a malignancy that attacks specific white blood cells referred to as plasma cells, those that make antibodies in opposition to infections. For this type of blood cancer, the count of platelets and red and white blood cells might be lower. For this type of blood cancer, the count of platelets, as well as red and white blood cells, might be lower. Targeted treatments, such as those offered by CSP, can support immune function through therapies like IG Therapy, helping patients better manage the immune-related impacts of myeloma.

Symptoms of Blood Cancer

Symptoms of blood cancer vary according to the type and subtype. Some types of blood cancers do not exhibit any symptoms immediately. Common symptoms and signs of blood cancer include:

  •     Abdominal, joint, or bone pain
  •     Chest discomfort or coughing
  •     Easy bruising or bleeding
  •     Fatigue
  •     Lack of feeling of fullness
  •     Fever
  •     Frequent infections
  •     Pale
  •     Spleen, liver, or lymph nodes are swollen
  •     Unexplained rashes or itching
  •     Unintended weight loss
  •     Numbness or weakness

Causes

Blood cancer is thought to be caused by some genetic and environmental changes that enable normal blood cells to become mutated and increase in numbers. For instance, DNA of bone marrow cells changes in leukemia.

Risk Factors

Some risk factors can place individuals at higher risk of developing blood cancer, but other than that, it remains unclear why one person might develop it and another may not. Leukemia risks include the following:

  •     Use of chemotherapy
  •     Exposure to carcinogenic substances, such as benzene or formaldehyde
  •     Having a first-degree relative who is afflicted
  •     Having Down syndrome
  •     Having myelodysplastic syndrome, a condition in which the bone marrow produces inadequate amounts of healthy blood cells
  •     Age-related myelodysplastic syndrome, a condition that affects healthy blood cell synthesis
  •     Exposure to radiation
  •     Smoking

The following are risk factors for lymphoma:

  •     The American Cancer Society. risk factors for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  •     Infections like Helicobacter pylori, Epstein-Barr, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis C
  •     A genetic tendency, such as having a sister, parent, or kid who has lymphoma
  •     Being overweight or obese and weakened immune condition due to autoimmune disease or
  •     immunosuppressive drugs
  •     Having textured breast implants
  •     Some chemicals at the workplace, or in the environment, like benzene, pesticides,        and herbicides
  •     Radiation exposure for an older age

Making a diagnosis

Sometimes, abnormalities are detected as part of routine blood work, while other times symptoms are what prompt the diagnostic process. Besides discussing your medical history, a healthcare provider may check you physically for signs of blood or bruises, or for enlargement of your lymph nodes, liver, or spleen. Among the diagnostic tests are: 869 MedlinePlus. lymphoma that is not Hodgkin.

  •     The number of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets can be determined by doing blood tests, which can be complete blood count. An elevated count of white blood cells can be indicative of leukemia.
  •     Bone marrow biopsy: This procedure may be prescribed to look for cancer cells in your bone marrow. To find out the type of leukemia, tests may be done on tissue and blood samples.
  •     Genetic tests: A medical professional may do a genetic test to check for chromosome or gene abnormalities. They may find more about the genetic makeup of the cancer in return.
  •     Imaging tests: To get a picture of the impact of the cancer on your body, several imaging tests may be conducted. Some of the imaging tests like CT scans and X-rays may be conducted on you.

Treatment

Many cases of blood cancers can be treated, although they cannot be cured. However, in some instances, some cancers could be healed. For example, many non-Hodgkin lymphomas can be cured through chemotherapy, while in rare cases, a patient may be cured through treatment of myeloma.

Treatment for blood cancer is highly dependent on several factors. These include the type of cancer, its location and characteristics, its progression, and general health. Among the potential therapy possibilities are:

  •     Watchful waiting or active surveillance (or keeping an eye on the illness for any developments)
  •     Transfusion of blood
  •     Chemotherapy
  •     Immunotherapy, including the use of monoclonal antibodies (rituximab) or CAR T-cell therapy
  •     Radiation treatment
  •     Bone marrow stem cell transplantation
  •     Surgery (such as the removal of the spleen or affected lymph nodes)
  •     Palliative treatments

Some patients with blood cancer may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial. Palliative care can be provided to reduce pain and other symptoms.

Prevention

Blood cancer can’t be prevented fully. You may have no control over your cancer risk. For example, there are no known risk factors for most cases of chronic myeloid leukemia. The risk factors for chronic lymphocytic leukemia are also very limited.

But by changing your lifestyle and avoiding certain environmental factors, you can reduce your chances of getting other types of blood cancer. It might help:

  •     Avoid carcinogenic agents.
  •     Avoid risky medical and health practices that enhance the risk of contracting AIDS or hepatitis C.
  •     Avoid unnecessary exposure to radiation.
  •     Quit smoking, or never start smoking.
  •     Maintain a healthy diet.
  •     Stay physically active.
