AVRDC seeks
a Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa to manage and coordinate
its research and development activities in the region. The position is based at
AVRDC’s Regional Center for Africa in Arusha, Tanzania. The Regional Director
reports to the Deputy Director General – Research.

1. Represent
AVRDC – The World Vegetable Center in Eastern and Southern Africa in line with
AVRDC’s mission and vision.

2. Develop
and maintain effective linkages with the host government and with other
initiatives and institutions to facilitate the Regional Center’s operations in
Tanzania and in the region.

3. Develop
and implement, with the Center’s Deputy Director General for Research, Global
Theme Leaders and the Center’s scientists, strategies and plans for the
Center’s research and development activities in Eastern and Southern Africa.

Coordinate, manage and monitor the Center’s research and development activities
and evaluate the performance of its staff in the region.

5. Encourage
and motivate staff in the region to prepare high quality research and
development proposals for funding.

6. Support
the Center’s staff in the region to publish their research in a timely manner
in peer-reviewed publications, and to respond to project or management
reporting requirements efficiently and effectively.

7. Manage
the daily administration of the regional office in Arusha, Tanzania in the

8. Propose
an annual work plan, and report on progress made to the Center’s Management.

9. Interact
with national, regional and international institutions to develop and expand
the Center’s research and development activities and impact. The Person:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in an agricultural science or an equivalent
qualification and at least 10 years of experience in conducting/coordinating
research activities and resource management, with demonstrated capacity for
leadership in an international, multidisciplinary environment. A track record
of publications and fundraising together with work experience in Eastern and
Southern Africa and with professional interaction with national and
international policymakers will be an advantage. Proficiency in written and
oral English is required, as is ability to communicate complex subjects
succinctly.

The Reward:
This is an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position with competitive pay
and benefits. The initial appointment is for three years and may be extended
depending on performance of the incumbent and availability of resources. The
position will be available on or before 1 August 2013.
