ABSTRACT

This project investigated “students’ assumption of
independence to perpetuate prostitution in Ofuoma community, Ughelli North
Local Government Area, Delta State. To guide the study, four research questions
and hypotheses was drawn and formulated. The research design that was used for
the study was the descriptive survey research method. The sample size of the
study was 200 students picked from hostel of residence. The instrument for data
collection was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was in two sections, A and
B. Section A involves demographic data, while section B deals with questions
that to elicit responses from respondents. Data collected from the
questionnaire were analysed using frequency distribution tables, percentages
and chi-square at alpha 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that
most students engaged in prostitution as soon as they assume independence from
their homes. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made (i)
There should be continuous sex education for youths in the campus (ii)
Religious leaders should endeavour to organise seminars to encourage spiritual
counselling on youths.
