Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) wishes to employ a highly qualified PDF Weed Science who The AfricaRice
will be based at AfricaRice’s East and Southern Africa research station in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Authority The PDF will focus
• on elucidating parasite virulence, biology and ecology of important parasitic weeds in rain-f fed rice and identifying resistant and d tolerant varieties and m mechanisms of effective host-plant resistance, leading to the development of acceptable and effective control s f strategies. She/he will report to
• the Weed Scientist, working in the Sustainable e Productivity Enhancement program m. The PDF will be p part of a mu ulti-disciplinary research team working to sustain and improve the productivity of rice-based systems in Africa in line with AfricaRice’s mission and mandate.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
enters work on parasitic weeds in n collaboration with partners from m national Lead the international universities and d research s systems; Investigate parasitic weed biology and ecology and the development of parasite f n ting durable control
• e options for resource- virulence in order to find clues for general poor farmers; Set up, supervise and evaluate m d multi-location and m multi-season field experiments to screen rice varieties for resistance and tolerance against Stringent , to study the of parasite virulence and the d durability of f defense m mechanisms; ; Set up and supervise m multi-locational and m multi-season farmer-p participator trials to technologies (including resistant t/tolerant r rice varieties) and collect farmer test control assessments of these; Set up an in vitro screening facility (micro rhizotron s system) for studies on parasitic n rice; weeds on r Undertake scientific analysis of q qualitative a and quantitative data, and other processes or publishing and reporting results s or findings s; essential Publish and communicate research results in peer-re s reviewed journals, policy briefs, general interest outlets and the m media; Supervise MSc and PhD students and AfricaRice support staff; Perform an ny other dut ties as required by the Center.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. degree in Agronomy, Plant Science or a related field; Fluency in English; Scientific publication record is considered an asset; Knowledge of rice production systems in Africa is considered as an asset.
