Abstract

This
research assessed the awareness level of the people of Ogwashi-uku community in
Aniocha South Local Government Area of 
Delta state on the prevention and treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy. The
purposes of the study include; assessing the level of awareness of the
population on the measures employed in the prevention of Diabetic Retinopathy,
assessing the level of awareness of the population on the possible treatments
of Diabetic Retinopathy, to create awareness on the prevention of Diabetic
Retinopathy, to create awareness

on the treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy. A
descriptive research design method was adopted for the research and a
convenience sampling technique was applied to select a sample size of 200
respondents. Structured questionnaire and oral interviews were used to collect
data from the respondents and data collected were compiled and analyzed using
the frequency distribution and percentages. The results obtained revealed that
the term Diabetic Retinopathy is known to 52.5% of the total population, 64.4%
of diabetics who have developed some complications, possess symptoms of Diabetic
Retinopathy, 56.5% of the population check their blood sugar levels at
specified or estimated time intervals and 43.5% do not. The research also
showed that the level of awareness of people of the prevention and treatment of
Diabetic Retinopathy are 48% and 41.5% respectively.
