Founded in 2012, the African Entrepreneurship Collective is a US-based
nonprofit organization that has developed a simple plan to tackle rampant youth
unemployment in Africa: support and empower young entrepreneurs to grow their
enterprises, whether they be businesses or charities, and create jobs for other
youth in their communities. Leveraging on-line curriculum, dedicated volunteer
instructors, and a global network of partners, AEC provides high quality
business education, mentoring, capital funding, and technical assistance
resources to grow African businesses.
THE OPPORTUNITY & RESPONSIBILITIES
We are looking for a highly talented and passionate Field Fellow to support
AEC’s work on the ground in Kigali, Rwanda.The Field Fellow will join a small
start-up team, and reporting to the Executive Director, will wear multiple hats
in a brand new nonprofit organization with big aspirations.
Fellows will begin with two weeks of intensive training in our San Francisco
office. Training will cover a wide variety of topics, including program
development, systems design, operations, leadership skills, and cultural
expectations.
Following training, Fellows will embark on their eight-month field
placement. Fellows will work closely with AEC’s on-the-ground partners to
prepare for the July 2013 launch of the Enterprise Accelerator, provide support
for students and instructors, and implement direct programming. Currently,
tasks will likely be:
PROGRAM & PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (50% time)
- Develop
and maintain relationships with key local/international community and
educational partners, manage contracts with local vendors, and develop
cost-effective partnerships with local providers; - Conduct
outreach on behalf of the program, and recruit & assess potential
students; - Manage
on-the-ground curriculum implementation, coordinating instructors,
logistics, students and technology to meet the needs of the institute.
OPERATIONS & GENERAL ADMINISTRATION (25% time)
- Serve as a
liaison to the HQ office, document office processes and procedures, track
expenses; manage systems of accountability in the on-site location; - Assist in
coordination of travel for staff and board members; - Conduct
site visits with potential funders, provide information for fundraising
efforts, update the organization’s blog/social media with on-the-ground
updates, assist with general communications efforts.
PROGRAM EVALUATION (25% time)
- Develop
and implement data collection methods, in partnership with other fellows,
to test organizational effectiveness with processes and outcomes; - Collect,
code, and analyze data, providing strategic recommendations to AEC
leadership; and - Synthesize
data for use in funding appeals, communications to stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
Fellows are passionate people wanting to make a change. They desire to
better understand how business solutions and entrepreneurship are key to
impacting the problems of global poverty, and want hands-on experience in
demanding settings. We are looking for individuals who can bring lasting impact
to our work. We are seeking candidates who will navigate fast-paced and
resource-constrained environments with enthusiasm, patience, and imagination.
We prefer those individuals who have previously taken on significant leadership
and management responsibilities, and who have had experience working in
ambiguous environments.Starting qualifications include:
- Self-starter,
with proven ability to produce results with light supervision - Proven
track record of leadership, planning and management responsibilities - Unrelenting
perseverance, personal integrity, and critical thinking skills - Commitment
to the mission of African Entrepreneurship Collective - 3-7 years
of work experience in relevant or applicable field – working abroad strongly
preferred - Must have
own computer - Graduate
degree preferred
COMPENSATION
This is an unpaid volunteer position. However, AEC will support the Field
Fellow with in-country housing and a small allowance for living expenses.
