ABSTRACT
This is a family case study on a one week old baby
suffering from ophthalmia neonatorum. Ophthalmia neonatorum is a form of
conjunctivitis occurring in infants younger than four (4) weeks. It can be a
leading cause of blindness in newborns if not properly managed. Ophthalmia
neonatorum can be prevented by screening of all pregnant mothers for sexually
transmitted diseases, immediate treatment of infected ones and cleaning of
baby’s eyes with sterile wool swab at birth to avoid infection of the eyes. In
this case study, the condition was managed according to the JCHEW National
Standing Order and home visits were carried out to assess the patient was
responding to the treatment given. During the home visit, the family members
were given health education on good personal and environmental hygiene was also
given to the family. The study helped in the establishment of rapport between
the family and health workers and the child was properly treated.
