Implication for nursing

The nurse as a health
provider has a great role or responsibility in improving the knowledge of
married couples on sickle cell disease. This can be achieved through health
education and counselling.
Health education: Married couples should be
health educated about sickle cell disease, its effect on the child, family and
the community psychologically, physically, emotionally and economically. They
should be made to know the nature of the disease and that it is avoidable when
they comply to genetic counselling before marriage.

Counselling: This should be base on
genotype. Couples should be encouraged to undergo genetic counselling and then
advice to do a genotype test and blood group. Both couples should be present
during the counselling. They should be made to know the importance and that
they are doing themselves a great deal of help and their unborn children.
The community health nurse
should take the teaching of married couple and even individuals in the
community her responsibility in order to acquaint them about genotype, sickle
cell disease, its potential hazard on their unborn children and its economical
effect on them. While those already affected should be taught ways of reducing
its complication.
