Causes of hazard of sawmill industries

The following are causes of poor standard of sawmill
industries

i.
Lack of infrastructure

ii.
Lack of proper funding (Finance)

iii.
Inadequate availability of skilled
personnel.

iv.
Lack of maintenance

v.
Poor quality standard

vi.
Lack of government approval

vii.
Bribery and corruption on the part
of inspection
 viii.
Difficulty in clearing imported
machine and spare parts

i.
Lack of infrastructure: The most
important of these is energy. The processes involved in the processing of wood
items are strictly tied to the use of equipment and machinery, which are
powered by electricity. Most manufactures depend on alternative energy supply
for full operation. Lack of Adequate infrastructure is an impediment to the
development of the wider economy, and can lead to high cost of production
Adam(2016).

ii.
Lack of proper funding (finance):
Most owners of sawmill industries lack enough finance to purchase needed equipment,
pay workers and maintain sawmill facilities (Bamikole, 2007).

iii.
Inadequate availability of skilled
personnel: This is a serious challenge to production of quality wood products.
The paucity (insufficient) of skilled manpower is prevalent in the industry as
technical school workers are few and not many people are willing to make a
career of sawmilling and furniture making (Dada, 2011). Although, manpower
training in the private sector of wood based industries is carried out to
certain level, it has little or no link to formal education. Therefore, most
activities in the sawmill industries are done by few workers.

iv.
Lack of maintenance: Maintenance of
sawmill industries such as sweeping of the facilities, washing/cleaning of the
equipment before and after used, provision of waste bin for proper collection
of waste and cleaning of the surrounding are not done by most sawmill
industries.

v.
Poor quality standard: Quality
standard of sawmill industries are not being practiced such as the use of kiln
seasoned wood for furniture items. In most cases, as a result of lack of
facilities most sawmill industries use air dried or green wood for production,
this increases product susceptibility to attack by wood destroying agent
(Ogunwusi, 2011).

vi.
Lack of government approval: To ensure
proper operation of sawmill industries, they should obtain a license from the
council and also ensure that the workers are healthy, not suffering from any
communicable diseases, but today because of lack of supervision, most sawmill
industries allow any kind of person in the industry, thereby endangering the
people’s lives.

vii.
Bribery and corruption on the part
of inspection: In the inspection of sawmill industries by environmental health
officers, they are being influence by the packages given to them such as money
drinks by the owner of sawmill, making them not to carry out proper inspection
of the sawmill in other to ensure that they comply with the set standard of
sawmill operation.
 viii.
Difficulty in clearing imported
machines, equipment and spare parts: Difficulty in clearing imported facilities
at the sea port as a result of poor congestion is a major problem in sawmill
industries in Nigeria, resulting in payment of terminal charges, thereby taking
a long duration of time to obtain container deposits leading to inability to
meet speedy and punctual delivery of finished goods (Arowosoge, 2010).
