community is faced with a major task of providing sufficient food of adequate
quality for the rapidly increasing human population. The food deficit situation
is more intense with protein deficiency when compared to the availability of
carbohydrate. A careful look at the community will immediately show
malnutrition as manifested by the number of children and the aged with clear
symptoms of kwashiorkor which is a protein – energy malnutrition that occurs in
children under 5 years. This is associated with symptoms include growth
retardation, underweight, anorexia, diarrhoea, oedema and a generalised apathy
which could mean great challenges to those affected.

calls for emergency measures to ensure an additional animal protein in order to
raise the protein intake of the average citizen of Okpokunou from its present
level and this can be provided through the consumption of land snail which is readily
available in the community and can be picked from the bushes or bought from the
market at a very affordable price.

The above observation necessitated the researcher to embark on this
research work to assess the awareness level of individuals on the nutritional
and health benefits of land snail in Okpokunou community and also provide
valuable knowledge in areas where there is a knowledge gap among members of the
community.
