Agua Sustainable is a non-profit NGO whose aim is to contribute to the sustainable management of water and of the environment at a local, national and international level, through promoting civic participation and developing knowledge and policies as well as institutional and legal standards. The institution’s actions are oriented toward research, advocacy, training and technical management.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
The current project, “Adaptation to Climate Change in Andean Bolivian Communities that depend on Tropical Glaciers” is implemented in the areas of Sajama (Sajama National Park, the municipalities of Curahuara of Carangas and Turko, Department of Oruro) and Illimani (Municipality of Palca, Department of La Paz). The project seeks to implement a participatory strategy for the adaptation to the effects of climate change, specifically on the retraction of the tropical Bolivian glaciers previously mentioned and their impact on the local municipalities. The aim is to promote sustainable production systems, portable water systems and environmental sustainability through the generation of knowledge, the design and implementation of specific adaptation projects, and the development of public policies at a local and national level.

THE VOLUNTEER’S ROLE
The following priorities have been set for this placement:

In the framework of the project, Agua Sustainable seeks a specialist in Hydrology and Management Models, to support and validate these studies: “Historic and Future Water Supply in Sajama National Park” and “Water Management Model in the Sajama NP”.

• Assisting in the identification of the area of study as well as boundary conditions for both studies;
• Supporting the study of historic and future water supply in the Sajama NP through field visits to the area of Sajama;
• Assisting in the development of the Water Management Model in the area of study identified and implemented using the MIKE BASIN software (multi-purpose GIS-based river basin simulation package)
• Participating in the development, identification and implementation of future scenarios for climate change, water use and adaptation in the Water Management Model of the Sajama NP;
• Contributing to the Water Management Model Final Report of the Sajama study area.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:
• University degree in Hydrology or relevant field (Post Graduate or specialty)
• Professional with knowledge of project implementation for the protection of natural resources, watershed management and/or climate change
• Experience in the development of hydrologic models and water management
• Proven ability to work in rural environments and to collect data in the field
• Strong analytical skills

Desirable:
• Spanish language skills
• Knowledge of MIKE BASIN or other management modeling software
