Organization: Wildlife Preservation Canada
Location: Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario (with camping, see below)
Field Technician: Applied stewardship of at-risk snakes
Remuneration: $2000/month. Work schedul
e is approximately 40 hours per week
(typically Monday – Friday, but with occasional weekends).
A shared camping site will be provided, or you can choose to find
accommodations in the area at your own expense.
Dates: May 1 – October 31, 2016.
Responsibilities
• Cover board surveys for at-risk reptiles
• Road mortality surveys for at-risk reptiles (on a bicycle)
• Radio-telemetry of snakes. This requires hiking through various challenging
terrains (thick forest, wetlands, dunes).
• Public outreach (speaking to the public about snake conservation)
• Data entry (Microsoft Excel) and analysis; compilation of reports under the
supervision of the project coordinators.
Required qualifications
• Recent university graduate in a relevant environmental/biology field.
• Excellent data collection skills.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to ask for
clarification if needed.
• Ability to follow directions, and to follow project protocols after on-site
training.
• Ability to complete set tasks independently and to work well as part of a
small team.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions and to work long hours to suit
project needs.
• Strong interest in conservation biology and Ontario wildlife; comfortable
handling snakes.
• Access to a vehicle strongly preferred, as the Park is not accessible by
public transit.
• Willingness to comply with health and safety regulations and animal care
protocol
• Previous experience with Ontario reptiles is an asset, but is not required.
